This Gearing Stuff Is Crazy!!!

lets see what you guys think. a savage .21 with a picco .27 & three speed. was running a 16/ 47 whic i think was cool... stripped out SG & friend had a 49t. put it in & car takes off quick like it jumps outs. went to a parking lot to open it up and i cant see a change in top end. the only thing is that am oing to mess with the shift points next time i go run it. i like good take off & great TOP END. what do you guys think i should run...

hey moto......gots to disagree with you on this one.... i

HIGHER GEAR ratio "number" (ex. 4.08:1) = Lower Gearing - EX. 13t cb/53t spur = 4.08:1 ratio-LOW GEARING!
(High gear ratio number = bottom end suffers, high top speed)

this is what you have in your thread...but its the exact opposite.....the higher the gear ratio.... the lower the top end and stronger the bottom end. using your example of 4.08:1.... what it really means that it takes the crankshaft 4.08 complete turns to turn the wheel of the vehicle one revolution.

LOWER GEAR ratio "number" (ex. 2.20:1) = Higher Gearing - EX. 20t cb/44t spur = 2.20:1 ratio-HIGH GEARING!
(Low gear ratio number = great bottom end, lower top speed)

on this one it is the exact opposite.....2.20 complete turns of the crankshaft to turn the wheel over one revolution. that is why the bottom end suffers with this type of gearing.

for an example.... a heavily modified racing camaro setup with 5.13:1 gears will probably kill the 1/8 mile in about 5 or 6 secs
no problem. now... take that same camaro to the 1/4 mile...and he kills the guys out the whole but runs out of gear half track and wind up getting his tail whipped running a 14 or 15 sec pass!!! now...take that same camaro and put 3.73:1 gears in it and he now does the 1/8 mile in about 9 secs....but his 1/4 mile time now goes to 10 or 11 sec passes!!

just wanted to explain it for the other people out there

oh....but the way...that chart is flat out awesome!!! it would be nice if people know how to use it!!! much respect on just taing the time to do it!!!!

any one have a good comb for wheeliez? running a picco .27 with 3 speed trans & losi tires. don't want to lose top end. have 18/47 right now.

i would think you would be doing wheelies with it, but if not then just try the next size up spur gear, 49. its 4 dollars. you will lose a touch of top end though
.

espdgonzo ........u can't have both worlds unless u get a killer engine. remember dude ....... to not lose top speed and still wheelie.... IT TAKES HORSEPOWER TO GET IT UP! you can't have both unless you have and engine that is an absolute HAWSE. but i would say go to the 49t spur and get the high speed 3rd to make up a lil bit of difference. something else to possibly help to is a GOOD pipe. you kinda left us in the cold........

I'm running a 13 tooth CB and a 52 tooth spear gear and I want to go LOWER for my Savage Puller, does any one make a "say 12 tooth CB and say a 56 tooth spear gear"? I want to go as LOW as possible for wheel speed all I'm doing now is slipping the clutch at 3/4 track with 50 lbs on the sled. Any idea's? I know I may have to mod the engine plate but I still think lowering the gear ratio with help. Thanks

I'm running 18/49 so that's 2.72 : 1 on this chart i have it says that gearing is only for on-road... People say use 18/47..
Now with that 18/49 set up i don't even have to set the mesh i just push the mill all the way over to the TVP and it's done and the mesh is kinda nice, but I'm not getting wheelies out of it...

Well excuse my questions cause maybe its a stupid one.
I'm use the savage to race in track and use the stock cb and spur
47-17 its a 2.76:1 i have a .28 stock motor and the truck have nice power and good speed to ,
so what i'm do bad ?
its a good combination for race?
excuse my english

So the chart says a 14/49 combo won't fit. Does that mean it won't fit in the truck or they won't mesh right causing problems? It's a Savage 4.1...

my gear combination is not shown on the chart....I'm a little confused because the gearing that i have is 47t and 17t...i didnt even check any gearing when i started using that combination. is this a good combination? if not then whats a good combination for low end and top end. i have no idea.

please help me guys..

I'm running 18/52 gearing with mods to engine plate and tvp, on a k4.6 motor, good accelaration and top end, with minimul wheelies so can keep under control under quick pull off..:bolt:

Thanks, i had something like that already which is:

Spur Gear/Clutch Bell Gear Ratio

Max Torque (Low End)
52/13 4.00
49/13 3.77
52/14 3.71

What i am really looking is people's experience with those ratios, and which ratios are better on that or that particular surface...

so with the ratios listed here, will all of them fit correctly?

only reason i am asking is my spur gear has stripped, this is the first time its happening and i just need to replace it.

so will any of these combos work?
