What’s up, everybody?? Hope everyone’s out doing RC things!!
I finally took the plunge and picked up one of the brand-new Savage Octanes on eBay. They’re also popping up on FB Marketplace.
After sitting for around 12 years, I expected a rebuild. The grease had turned into dried-up peanut butter, and the transmission was packed with way too much of it. I run my Savage transmission dry.
Whoever built this one definitely wasn’t afraid of Loctite! 😂 Thankfully, with a little heat and patience, I only sacrificed one diff cup. I had to drill the head off one screw, and another snapped while loosening it, so I didn’t even bother trying to save that one. Luckily, I had a spare. I rebuilt the diffs with 100,000-weight silicone oil. Greased the ring and pinion.
I also upgraded the servos to Savöx high-torque HV servos, so I can eventually run LiPo receiver packs. I got it added to my Spektrum, and the servos are working smoothly!
I’m hoping the tires come back around. There’s a hard spot where the foam was glued together. Maybe it’s from sitting so long… or maybe the same person who loved Loctite went nuts with the tire glue! 😂
Going to run it with 93octane and Amsoil Dominator 2stroke oil
