hey guys id like to know what is a good nitro engine for the savage 21 , i turned it into a shelf queen , i thought i would make it stronger by replacing all stock plastic parts with aluminum/titanium and never thought about the added extra weight . well when i finally fired it up i noticed right away how the stock engine struggled to get it jumping and moving all that weight so its time for a new engine anyway I'm looking for something with a little more power to get this up to stock speed, i really don't want so much power that it chews up the gears and spurs. any ideas ?

Do you know if it has 4-spider diffs or 2 spider? The first savage 21 had 2 spider diffs and couldn't really support more power without at least upgrading that.

With that in mind, the HPI 25 would be a mild upgrade. Not sure what's available these days though.

The old 21 diff cases (the gear box the entire diff goes in) liked to flex, so a higher power engine would chew through ring/pinions quite often unless you upgraded the cases/gear boxes to alloy and shimmed them really well. That's what I ended up doing on my "21 chassis" savage back in the day.

The later Savage X gear boxes are tougher and don't flex as much. I ran an LRP28 in my X before upgrading the diffs to BP diffs, but it was still pretty hard on the machined diffs with smaller teeth. Once I upgraded to BP diffs, I didn't have many issues. Perhaps the BP diffs will fit in the 21 savage as well, at least the ring/pinion. rc4me.us has BP ring/pinions pretty cheap.

Here's a few:

I can't recall which savage had that first engine, but it would be an upgrade in power over the 21 and 25.

I've seen videos of the second engine and I've had a few dynamites in the past. It's not a bad engine, but I don't care for the roto/pull start combo as it was kind of fragile.

The 3rd engine I know nothing about, but it has a regular pull start, which I'd be more inclined to trust. I can't imagine it's too bad. Dynamite engines usually run pretty good, hold a tune well and put out decent power.

I'm curious, @bobbd, have you weighed your Savage? I'm fairly certain if somebody looks at your truck wrong it could bend.

Best engine hands down I’ve ever run in a savage was the picco p3 .28. Absolute monster and a great reliable motor. Hard to come by these days but man is it a runner

I have one of those. Never ran it. Bought it on a forum NIB to use when one of my LRP's died, but they never did. Can't remember when I bought it, was at least 6 years ago as I had my aftershock at the time and I'm 99% sure I sold it in 2011.

I did take a picture of it a couple years ago... lol! Kind of forgot about it. Then OFNA ceased to exist, so now it will just sit as I have really good engines in my 3 nitros and I have no real reason to fiddle with it considering how little I drive my nitro's these days. Good looking engine though. :)
