upgraged engine for Savage X?

Hey guys i have a Savage X with the stock .25 engine(4.1 i believe) and was considering an engine upgrade. I mostly am a basher and love jumping, but me and some friends are building a track to run on this spring also. Looking for more torque than speed, but speed is good too. Any suggestions? Also what other upgrades if any would i need to pull off the engine swap. Thanks.

i have never used one myself yet but most here love the LRP engine,apparently its easy to tune and holds a tune really well and it has loads of power so if you were wanting a bit more speed then torque you would just have to tinker with gearing combo's!! and as far as dropping it in your truck,as far as i know its a direct drop in!! hope this helps a bit!!

I like the lrp too but its not for a stock tank. it will mid tank lean like crazy

oh really? i didnt know that!! so its a great engine but not with the stock tank hmm interesting.. i seem to learn something new everytime I'm here! lol thanks for adding your expereince with this bank as i would really hate to steer someone wrong, so thank you!!
 
thanks for the info guys. An LRP mill wouldn't be good with the stock tank? WHat causes the lean issue with the stock tank?
I don't relly know what new engines sell for so i don't know what to say to how much i wanna spend. My engine runs strong still and i hate to change something that works and is reliable.
Just trying to gain some knowledge in case something would happen to my current mill.

your basic "sport" or rtr engines are usually between $100-200 for example the LRP engine is around $160.00 but the higher end italian made engines like the novarossi's can go for up to like $500.00 dollars but these are just examples.....
 
just my 2 cents, but a mid tank mod is fairly easy and inexpensive mod, so i would'nt let that discourage you from the LRP.

from the mid tank mods i've seen i would have to agree 100% as i've heard and also watched some very impressive vids of the LRP and i myself was running its twin "xtm 457" and was amazed of how much power it had and i got it tuned well and never touched the needles after that no lie!!! and the xtm has the exact same specs as the LRP and i just found out the xtm comes off the same production line to !! so the LRP would be a great choice!!
 
i am pretty sure my friend has a LRP .28 in his savage with the stock tank and doesn't have problems that i know of. Should he be looking for certain signs of this "mid tank" lean? Hasn't had any problems with it.

Also where can i look at LRP mills? Who sells them and what size would be the best choice?
 
A bit surprised that the Picco 28 hasn't been mentioned here yet. They run around $190 most places and will out run the LRP and will way out last it. Its an Italian mill. It's a high end mill at a great price. They are tough to get currently as everyone is out of stock for the most part.

good point!. I've heard great things about picco. and its on my list to replace my f 4.6 . sad to say, but i'm looking forward to blowing it. it may be a while tho.
she's on her 6th gal of byron 30% and still pulling wheelies on command..:smiliejam:
 
I have almost gone through my 5th gallon of trinity 30% in my picco .28 and it still runs like its new. No complaints. And ya, i think it is under 200.00.

hey, are you running a 2 or 3 speed trans, i have heard that picco was hard on 3 spds. as in ripping 3rd gear out.
 
I ran an LRP with stock tank and it worked awesome. Every person vehicle is different so there is going to be different experiences with it.

Motors I would look at.

LRP .28
Picco .28
Axial .28 (Almost identical to Savage 4.6 motor. It's cheaper then the rest but is an all around good motor. Better then your .25, but not as good as the ones mentioned before.)
Axial .32(Is a torque motor. It will not have the same top end and the above motors. But the bottom end is more powerful and you can gear it for more top end. But if you are going to gear it for more top end you might as well get one of the other motors.)
 
If your a towerhobbies member you can get the picco .28 for 165 shipped and the lrp for 150. it also looks like tower also has the lrp .30 for 199.99 so you could also get that for the same price as a picco
