Today I finished up adding some new parts to my brand new Savage X (tuned pipe, fuel filter, wheelie bar) so I decided to start the break-in process. Well nothing went as planned. With a fully charged HPI Pro glow igniter and fully charged battery for the RotoStart ready to go, I filled the tank with 20% Top Fuel and proceeded to prime. My first mistake was letting to much fuel in so it hydrolocked. :duh: :istupid: (Insert operator error comment here.) So now I remove the glow plug, turn the truck upside down and turn the engine over a few times to release some of the excess fuel. When I was done, I loosely screwed the glow plug back in, proceeded to heat up the head with a hairdryer. I put the glow igniter back on and tried to start it again. This time it was turning over but would not start. I noticed that the meter on the igniter dropped to the recharge area quickly. Probably because it was using a poop load of power turning it over. At this point it's 8:00 PM, the igniter needs to be charged and I'm completely aggravated :cussing: because I wanted to at least get one tank through. So now the igniter is back on the charger and and my truck is officially idle for this evening. I'll try again tomorrow with a fully charged igniter. With some luck my truck might get running.

Yep traxxas fuel has too much oil, causes your OWB to slip and then it makes it harder to start and then sometimes impossible if your OWB doesn't grab. I have run trinity and I liked it but now I run O Donnell's %30...best fuel I have ran so far and I like the smell it has also 😀

Keep us updated on how it goes and welcome to the forum!

Sorry i couldnt come over and help out. i have heard goo things about that fuel. my friend uses it with no problems in all his trucks. weird. i was going to get it for my next gallon but maybe ill do some more research. i had the same problem when my savage was new. couldnt get it to turn over and i was using odonnell fuel.

Don't forget guys that a new motor is normally really tight and the Roto-start doesn't like to turn it over without kicking the breaker out if you have a roto-start 2. You can loosen the glo plug to make it easier and then once it is started tighten it back down.

Hope this helps

UPDATE😀Jjam:

After reading various threads about breaking an engine in, I finally got the truck started. I had some trouble keeping it running at first once it started but xsavage3148 and I tossed few ideas back and forth and a slight adjustment to the idle kept it running. I was able to get a full tank of the 20% Top Fuel through and I'm ready for 3-4 tankfulls of light driving.
I have to say, all of the information, well wishes, and offers of help from the members of this forum was really great. :beforeme: It kept me from getting completely discouraged. The one additional ingredient to having great people around in this hobby is patience. Having patience will pay off in the long run and will ensure that my motor stays running because I took the time in the beginning. All the best to everyone and happy bashing!

ya i've always said traxxas fuel is great for the traxxas engines as there small blocks so they rev alot higher so more lubrication is needed but throw it in one of these big blocks and it seems to "gum" everything up and cause one way bearing slippage among other things.... i learned the hard way as usual lol glad to hear you getting things worked out!!

Thanks Nitroaddict. I have a 1/2 gallon left of the Traxxas 20%. I may switch to the Trinity when I finish up the Traxxas.

I try not to bash many products. But I will say this is a very good Idea. Would also recommend trying Byron's gen 2 if you can. I'm also using top 10% for my 528 but this is only do to Rossi's run in "procedure" It calls for oil and low nitro 8%... as soon as the quart is gone Gen 2 25% FTW!

Model Technic's 25% is ok, right? How much does the % of oil matter?
I copied this from the store's page:
65% metanol 4% EDL-olja 6% ricinolla 25% nitrometan
Is that OK? 🙂

yes i wasnt meaning it to sound like i was bashing top fuel as it works fine in the higher revving traxxas small blocks as they need the lubrication but just seems to be a bit to much oil for most big blocks!!!

I started my k4.6 on odonnell20 and after about 1 1/2 gals I thought about switching to topfuel cause my roommates .25hpi runs so well on it. I was gonna do this cause I couldnt get mine tuned right on the odonnell, I couldn't hardly get the truck to run at all on topfuel, bad decision. Finally I sealed the motor and stayed with odonnell, been great ever since. I have to think on the big blocks the topfuel might not be so good. Ive got three gals of odonnell in and it runs great , lots of compression.

I was also told that the Traxxas fuel is more forgiving on the mill since it has a higher oil content.
True and false... Its a fine line between good oil and too much. If not for the OWB Top would be fine IMO.

Like I said I used a quart of TOP 10% just for its low nitro and good oil blend Castor/ synthetic. But just for the run in. Most new fuels are going more towards synthetics and my rossi says its a no no...

IDK all mfgrs are saying different things every day. I do know if you kept on the top you would have starting issues and a toasted OWB soon. As far as your sleeve and pinch. I'm sure you did it a favor in its early days of high friction.
