Steering issues

Ok today was a day of many troubles.

It started with the stock steering servo stripping gears. So I go to the LHS and pick up a HITEC 5645. Put it in with the ofna horn and 2 minutes in the screw backs out of the the servo and strips the horn. Put new horn on and 5 minutes later does the same thing. Put another horn on with a lock washer and it backed out a gain. Sounds like the servo also stipped the gears inside. Is this possible? I have a GH aluminium steering servo saver.

Any ideas. I thought HITEC 5645's are good servo's. But it stipped out in 5 minutes.

Can i get replacement metal gears for this servo?

and looctight the horn screw .. maybe loosen up the servo saver sounds like you have it to tight..

I did not know they made a non metal gear version. I will take it apart and look. How tight should the servo saver be? Just so the spring starts to compress.

I don't know whats going on but my 5645MG has lasted over a year with the stock servo horn.

Make sure you blue loctite the screw and make sure there is a washer that looks like this http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXFUS5&P=7 on there too.

They don't make a plastic gear version.
the 5645MG has metal gears right from the getgo.

I think I stipped out the gears but not sure I have not take it out yet. It just sounds like it. I will loosen my spring on the servo saver and slowly tight as needed. I will also add the blue horn as seen in your picture along with the loctight.

and don't forget the lock washer.
The servo should of came with one.

Nothing more frustating than going twice now with my buddy who has a slash and watch him go battery after battery while I am becoming more frustrated by the minute. I keep telling myself it will pay off in the end. It is not even the nitro parts that are the problem to be honest that is the best part of the truck.

make sure you zero the servo.
Put the steering knob on your handset all the way to the left. put the horn on in the middle and test your steering.

They are all metal but one plastic one coming off the main motor. Anyway not the one that stripped.

and the 5645MG has 168oz in at 6V so the servo saver set up i posted is fine.

Update!

Replaced the stripped gears in the servo. Took the aluminum servo savor apart cleaned well, lubed, sanded, and put back together. Smooth as silk. Tested on savy by holding the servo and moving the wheels. Works great. Took out for some bash time and whala went through 4 tanks without a hickup. Best time I have had yet with the truck. The only thin that stopped the fun was one of the main drive cup screws fell out or broke one of the two. Did not find this till I gotter her home and took her apart. Can't wait till this weekend for another bash session.

the savy is very hard on steering servos due to the weight. I don't know the specs of your current servo but id recommend investing in a digital titanium gear high torque servo like the 5955, 7955 servos from hitec or another brand of preference with similar specs. savox makes some good servos also for about 30% less than the "major" brand named servos. I have run 5955 and 7955 servos in the savage with great results.

ya not only the savage but alot of the rc trucks are way under powered in the stock steering servo department i have watched a zillion reviews of different branded rc's and most stated the steering servo was weak lol

yep that would trash a servo after a while to,good point!!!! I'm going to do the steering mod this week "replace plastic bushings with bearings" apparently makes a big difference!!
