So I ran about three tanks through the truck yesterday and during the usual after run look over I noticed my cb has about 2mm fore and aft play and its picked up a little wobble. I haven't torn it down yet but I suspect the rear bearing is toast. Luckily ive got a couple spares laying around. I haven't ordered from Boca before but after doing some research on here it seems like they've got a good rep for backing their stuff. For now I'm going to replace it with a Fast Eddys ceramic spare from my Exo Terra stash. Any advice on what type of shield these bearings should have? Rubber or metal? And as far as shimming am I just looking for very slight fore and aft play and checking that the shoes are covered completely? The wife is gonna birth a cow if I spend another truckload of dough on bearings (like the Exo fiasco)! Bwahahaha!
 
There isn't a spec per say on how much play should be in the clutch bell. I do as you say, very little play without causing friction.

As far as the bearings themselves go. I love Boca's LBT Ceramic bearings, but they are quite expensive. Some will say to stick with all metal due to the heat, but I have had no issues with the rubber seals in those bearings. I haven't had to replace my clutch bell bearings in quite a long time.

I checked out their website last night. Pretty sure those seals are silicone rubber to take that kind of heat. I looked at my clutch a little closer this morning and noticed the bearing race for the front bearing hanging off the crank snout. So I definitely annhialated it. Oh well. Probably going to just man up and replace every darn bearing throughout the truck now. Rip off the band aid and get it over with ya know?!
 
That's what I did years ago, with the bearings I showed you. I have never looked back. Quality fasteners and bearings are two of the most under looked mods to RCs, but you benefit greatly from them.

I was looking at the yellow seal set on Boca's site last night. $139. The ones you linked to are orange? And it comes with EVERY BEARING in the truck right? Might have to dip into my top secret rc fund for that! I Read on here last night a post about eliminating the brass spacer on the end of the crank and replacing it with a piece of fuel line. Is that a good idea or should I find another spacer?
 
I replaced that brass spacer on my truck with a short piece of fuel tubing, so far it works fine....
 
Yea, I believe those kits should come with everything you need for 1 truck. I linked the orange, but those are top of the line. The yellow ceramics are fantastic bearings as well but for less than half the price.
 
Back when I was buying mechanic tools there was a sign on the snap-on dealers truck inside for all to see, it read "BUY THE BEST AND CRY ONLY ONCE" 😀
 
They were actually alot cheaper when I bought them years ago. 🙂
 
I've used the yellow Bocas in the past, and was very happy with them, did no maintenance, ran all winter and in the wet spring... never an issue
 
So ive done some comparison shopping between boca and acer. Acers savage kit includes everything the boca kit has. Acer wants $67.00 and boca is $130.00. what am I missing? Both are ABEC #1 ceramic bearings, both include the same size and quantity. I can justify the price for the boca kit if anyone can honestly recommend them over the acer kit. Any takers? Oh and ditch the stock servos when they die. The rtr steering servo is weeeeak. Check out the protek 100t over at Amain. Its relatively cheap and twice as strong.

I ran mine right through the snow. I got maybe 12 tanks before it died a horrible twitching death. Assuming the servos on the old .25 RTR are the same.

I have no idea, Boca was not nearly that much 8-9 years ago
 
I couldnt find a ceramic set for the Savage on fast eddies website last night. I used their bearings in my exo and they did pretty good. Exo terras are known to shred hub bearings at an alarming rate and FE's held up for about 20 packs.
 
So I am curious why are you looking for ceramic bearings? For the price any speed you gain is minimal if you are not a hardcore racer then the cost is not worth it in my opinion, I bash and Fast Eddies bearings are a good deal.
 
Ceramic is harder and longer wearing. Not looking for gains in speed. Although they do roll smoother longer than chromed steel bearings. Looking for durability and longevity between rebuilds. Longer time between teardowns equals less time on the workbench and more time playing in the dirt!
 
Thanks for the fuel line spacer tip @Jam Racing 1 ! Ran the savage last night at thanksgiving for my two year old nephew and my brother. All the little dude could say was MONSTER TRUCK! Over and over! Pretty sure my brother is gonna have to get a savage now!
