Yep... those hat nuts stink. The one on the left looks like an older one, they were thicker back then, then they changed them.
I found some axial ones that were made a lot better, but the first 2mm or so aren't threaded, so they don't hold on by much. The two on the left are the same part number from HPI, the far left is older stock, the middle is the newer ones:
