rotostart not worth aggravation

is it me or is the rotostart that came with my savage x more aggravation than it is worth? it is not something that you could stick in your pocket & if you are not near it & your sav stalls, it stinks.
.
batteries are an issue with it & i hooked it up to my electric drill & must have gotten a good shot of fuel into the chamber and broke my 1-way bearing.
.
i think that i am going to switch to a pull start when i replace the 1 way and then throw the roto as far into the woods as i can (or sell it on ebay)

I wouldnt throw it out. The rotostart is very handy with new high pinch engines. I would keep it around.

blaze, i am very green at this. what is a 'high pinch.' i will hang onto it just because you never know, but i had a crappy $200 buggy before i bought the sav & it had a pull start which seemed less of a hassle between the battery being dead when i wanted to rock. do u use a roto or pull? & which do you prefer?

I prefer Pullstart.. but a roto start can be a welcomed change once in awhile..

High pinch.. Is how tight the engine is to turn over .. New engine have tight pinch which makes them harder to turn over..

Get a quick charger you will have the batteries charged in 15 min

Yep ditto. I personally run pullstarts because I run at a track with no power and its a pain to lug it around. I used to run one and liked it.

my rotostart never worked right. i just use the cordless drill which is a pain to lug around

I like the pullstart too and run it on my basher. I only run the rotostart for racing because I have so much stuff there anyway.... Why not one more thing.

But if your not good at tuning your engine or the engine is worn out and hard to get started you will get some blisters (if your not careful) from the pullstart handle. But its much easier than a roto as all you need is an igniter and your up and running again if it dies.

Guys, thank you for your time and replying to my post. I am thinking that i will put on the pull start and put the roto to the side for now.

However, i removed the engine last night to 'have a look' and found that the starting pin (hpi part # 1433) that goes inside of the connecting rod and sits into the grove on the starting shaft had slid in toward the engine (losing contact with the grove in the shaft) which caused the piston to bind and then the starting shaft & roto start just spun freely without moving the piston. i do not see the spring inside of the engine anywhere, but looks like i have to rip the rest of the engine apart to find it so that it doesn't cause more damage.:duh:

has this ever happened to anyone else? my mill only has about a gallon through it and i am anxious to get back in the game.

I keep my rotostart around for breaking in motors. after the motor is broke in i use pull start....its no fun to lug around a rotostart,a battery and a battery charger...

i don't mind the rotostart, i just don't like having to carry it with me of i leave my pit area (fuel bottle, ignitor, rotostart)

so i purchased a pull starter as my first upgrade.

Part # 1428 works with the 1 way bearing in the rotostart.

Is there a pull starter for the F4.6 engine (Savage X4.6 RTR) that I can find on tower? (because it would be easier for me to order it, because I'm from Romania).

And beside the pull starter, do I also need another piece?

look at my post above your's.

all you need to order is HPI part # 1428

you use the bearing that is allready on your crankshaft under the rotostart.

remove the 3 screw's, take off the rotostart, make sure the 1 way bearing is on the crankshaft, then install the pullstart, and re-install the 3 screw's.

be sure to use a little loctite on the thread's of the screw's.

I used to love pull start after break in. But since now the condition I have in my body has gotten worse I am needing to use the rotostart all the time. The major reasons why I liked the pull start more was just because it was easier on One Way Bearings and it was one less item I needed to carry around.
