what can cause the connecting rod to break at the piston.

Wow, was the motor brand new? Has is it been run for quite a while? We need more info.

it was broked in already. just smashed it, shifted to 2nd gear, and then in 3rd and just pop. came home and took engine apart and found the rod broken by piston pin and metal frags.

What do you use to start it , a roto start or a drill? I have a buddy that used a drill and tried to start a flooded engine, Wouldn't go so he cleared it got it to fire then the same thing as you described happened but I think he hit second when it let go.

lets see some pics. The bearings could of been super sloppy causing stress on the rod. Just a thought I don't know.
