I just purchased a Savage 4.6 and am trying to break in the motor. At factory settings it runs very rich and ocassionally stops suddenly and will not take throttle. Temp is running around 210 F, This seems worse when tank has reached about 1/2 full, if I refill the tank things improve. Question, at what throttle setting does it transition from low speed to high speed needle settings. In other words at about 1/4 throttle is it running mostly on the low speed or the high speed? I am a Motorcycle mechanic so I know carbs and am skilled at tuning, in my youth my Father and I did the airplane thing and we had a break in stand to break in a new motor. Back then we only had one adjustment as it was U-control and high speed tuning was all that was necessary as the engines always ran at full throttle. Perhaps someone can tell me what is happening at the 1/2 tank mark for starters. Thanks for your time.

I'm looking for threads with your answer. Its MTL ...

Edit :
I cant fond one but you are experiencing Mid tank lean. It has to do with the pressure head in the tank N stuff.

Mid tank lean. It has to do with the shape and location of the stock fuel tank. Tune your motor with the fuel about half full. You'll be a little rich for the first half of the tank but it will prevent your motor from overheating when it gets low. You can also remedy this with a mid tank conversion.

Welcome to :hpisf:

In short I need to refill when the car stops runing at 1/2 tank and just live with it? If HPI is listening they should figure a fix as this weems to be a design problem that affects all Savage owners and just drives us new guys crazy. Thanks so much for everyone's input to me.

Still having problems tuning the engine. It runs great at low to mid throttle but when throttle is added above that pint it just stops running suddenly. I have about worn out the high speed needle and somtimes it semms to run OK. I have run a little over a quart of fuel through it so it should be near broken in now. I am going to return to factory settings today and try again. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for your time, sorry my posts are so long but I try to give all information that I can.

Welcome to the forum. The motor isn’t fully broke in till about a gallon, I’ve got told when I had that kind of problem to increase your fuel lines or shorting them up I’ve found that a little short works for mine. as for the hsn what do you mean by worn out? it may be possable that you could have a air leak meaning air is getting inside the mill.

I got her going, just needed som more break in and a bit of tinkering. Running great now. Thanks for the input from you guys.
