I have decided that the LRP Z.28R SPEC.3 is the way to go to replace my motor in Savage XL5.9

What do I need to bolt this straight in. I have read briefly about spacing, Aluminum clutch because the nylon ones melt with this motor, gearing.
Do I need a wheelie bar lol.

I am sure there are many mods i could do but i am working on a tight budget and the motor is $300AU only.

Only thing they don't have in stock is the rotor plated but the motor has a pull start and they can add some length to make it easier to get to.

Is the pull start better than the rotor start?
I ask this as the OWB was the 1st thing to go on my XL.

Thanks in advance.

This motor will be a direct drop in. I tend to like or go with Pull as its easier on OWB's. Whale you have it apart some sort of alum shoe would be best to go with. There are many different kinds and most are good. A great set for a cheap price is the Integy ones. Good luck

Roto was the first thing i pulled off my X rtr, now that i think of it, i bash with 7 others & all have converted to a pull.. 1 less battery to charge (& die on you) & you don't have to haul that bulky roto thing or a drill around IMO:resp:

Good choice! I have one still in a box never used. I want the new LRP .30 but haven't heard much. I'd sell mine if it was a good price for the mill. Oh don't go roto u want to feel what your mill is always saying to you... :beer:cheers

What's a good price to you Piper? hmmm? It's either LRP or Picco for Geanii's next motor. Akiran I would definatly convert to pull start and alum shoes while you have the motor out =)

sorry I ment a good price for the new LRP if it was under 300$ I'd consider selling it other wise I'll slap it in when my Axial 32 is dead. Anyone seen any prices? :beer:cheers

I have the LRP 3 pullstart. Love it too. good motor and you cant beat the price. From the XL you will want a 47 spur and a 17-19 CB I liked 18. You will also need a pipe don't use the Xl's. 086 and buku ran like a champ on mine. HPI polished was a flop messed with the low end. I ran both carbon and alloy shoes on mine.

If you do buy the lrp, make sure to toss the collet they send with it. It has a goofy taper on it and wont mate well with the flywheel. You wont regret that engine. It has an easy break in, brutal torque and a fair top end.

Ok guys thanks for the input, but I think we have well blown the budget now with all these added extras like
toss the collet
BUKU pipe
47 spur and a 17-19 CB I liked 18
carbon and alloy shoes .

Is there a motor I can just drop in, its my 1st car and I have already spent $1500, buy time I the LRP its going to be another $500.

May ebay for a standard motor:duh:

Thanks again, just need to keep my options open.

Technically you can just buy the motor and drop it into your current setup. I think they were simply trying to help you get the most of it by suggesting the add ons. I wouldn't buy a lesser engine, sooner or later you'll wish you got the one you wanted.

Welcome to savage world. I dropped 3800$ in 9months and i'll never get that coin back lol.. or almost the wife! lol X is right don't go smaller your running the XL your weight is more then the X and a 4.6 wont cut it. Get the original one or look for a used bigger mill with 2-3 gallons through it for a cheap price. :beer:cheers

The advice has been well appreciated, its not that I don't want to go down the path of spending all this money.

I have just been keeping my options open and learning which is the best way to go for the truck and my wallet. There seems to been many options out there. The advice here has been more than I have receive from the shop concerning pipers and spacers.

I understand how much money can go into the car, that's what got me worried lol.

Guys between my motocross bikes, the rc car and if we are talking a endless money pit hobbies have a look at my greatest passion here, http://www.akiranbullterriers.com

Sorry I know its r/c related

I am sorry piper, but I must disagree here :resp:

I have an Axial .28 running in an XL conversion and that motor pushes the truck just fine. Only difference between mine and a XL is that I still have the stock 8mm bones and not running terapins. I think the LRP/BUKU setup will push that truck very well.

You can be set with just the LRP for now. If moneys tight you can run with the stock pipe however you will just not see the full performance.

you can also run the original gearing till you see fit and want something different just like the pipe. Also the Carbon shoes are ok but Alum. would be better, a cheap set of shoes are the Integy ones part number T7042 for under $10 to get you buy.

So all in all you are able to just drop in the LRP and be just fine, but some additions will bring out the performance or the motor. Either way this motor will way out perform the 5.9.

Thats the question right there the rest can wait! Has anyone run the LRP on the XL pipe. His gearing will be fine but it will flip over every time he hits the gas. Some like that!

Pipe is the issue!!! Someone please chime in! Don't confuse the XL pipe with the Polished too ... Not the same Also 20 bucks not worth spending on the LRP...

another fyi, weighed my X & a buddie's XL on the scale at work & my X is a full pound heavier (due to the mods that i have done). haven't run anything in it yet but the F4.6 & it always ripped even before modding
