How to clean your air cleaner ?

Newbie question. I have a X 4.6 and was reading the manual. They suggest you clean after every run. Is this overkill ? Also tells you how to clean the inner part but does not mention the black outer portion. Do clean it the same way ( with nitro fuel ) or use something else ?

I always just washed them with soap and water. I use a special oil now that you need to use a special cleaner for. But most oil will wash out some dish soap. just wash the outer the same way. It will just be much easier to clean because it wasn't oiled.

I check mine after every couple tanks if its really dusty. But in grass, the road or on hard packed dirt they can last all day and be fine.

If you bash I do recommend that you just look at the air cleaner after every run just to make sure its still attached properly. Nothing worse than getting your new motor all full of crud and ruining it.
