Help please Engine won't start

Hi everybody,

I am a newbie and i own a Savvy 3.5. She has had half a tank of fuel a couple of weeks ago and this was the first, the pull start melted through so i've been waiting for this to be replaced. It came yesterday so i have been looking forward to getting it going and broke in today.

Unfortunatley however if it does start, it either revs like mad until it cuts out a few seconds later or idles ok for a couple of second before cutting out.

I don't know what to do!??? Help please!
 
that half tank of fuel was part of the break-in process right? how did u melt the pull-start?

if she revs like mad it could be your low speed needle is to lean, refer to the manual to see which is low-speed
 
so you have not even a full tank through a new engine. Make sure your needle settings are at factory settings. also check your glow plug and lighter.Then check your carb opening is aprox. 1mm open, and that when electronics is on it stays that way. Also during break in the engine will run eratic and stall reguraly. Start it,and just nudge the throtle just to keep it running.Try these and let us know.Good luck.

The half tank was part of the break in but i have put fresh fuel in today so I don't think it is that.

I'm not sure quite how the pull start melted through as i didn't even have the body on or rev it to make an excess of heat build up. I got it replaced on the warranty though so all is good on that front

The engine should be set up as factory settings as i haven't changed anything.

I'll try the thing you suggested and get back on later.
 
Don't mean to sound thick but do i have to remove the air filter to check the carb is open correctly?
 
yes luke remove the air cleaner and look down carb throat

with the radio gear on see if the opening is correct
 
Right thanks for the help! I got it running and put another tank through it. It ran fine then cut out and i couldn't get it going again.

I did a couple of half throttle laps in the second half of the tank and i loved it man, can't wait to get i fully broke in!

Think it might be the glow plug this time so i am charging my charger overnight just to be sure. Is there a reliable brand of glow chargers that people use or do people use different types for different reasons?

Glad to hear you got it going! Many people hear love the McCoy MC-8 plug. I use the MC-9 in my K5.9 but I'll try the MC-8 again after I get a Picco.

what was the issue you found?
 
I'm not really sure why it wouldn't start tbh (may have just been cold).

It did eventually go and the idle speed is very high, the wheels go around and it moves without any throttle being applied.

The trim on the transmitter is all the way to a lower idle rpm so i'll have to wait until it is properly broken in before i can do anything about that.
 
Glad to hear its runnin. Maybe you can try the idle screw backit out a little.It should settle the idle down to where it wont roll on its own.
 
Is it wise to mess with the idle screw before the mill is properly broken in?

Also i tested the glow plug and it worked today; didn't get to start it though! Too much other stuff to do. Must have been a dead glow plug charger. Doh!

Hopefully i'll get another crack at it this week. I'll keep the MC-8 in mind for when i do need a new one though. At the minute am thinking best time to replace it would be straight after i finish the break in. Is that a decent idea?

What else is recommended after braking in a new savvy. Anything i need to be aware of? So i can pre empt it and get the parts? I actually love tinkering with it too!

First off welcome the the savage family.
If the idle is to high turn it a 1/8 turn. first adjust your trim or the radio and see if that helps if it doesnt might have to rest the servo horn and go from there. you cold if you want I have just went and kept on running after the break in and let it wear out till I changed mine other guys on here may tell you different but its up to you on that. Make sure you put after run oil in the mill and leave the piston at bdc (bottom dead center) when done running. There are many things to do to the savvy on thing I would do is the ofna throttle brake mod. http://www.rcbasher.com/savthmod1.html
