Help Me Please!!!

Ok I really need help with getting my vids into Windows movie maker. We have a new Sony camcorder and I know how to finalize the disc, get it into computer and to drag and drop parts I want to desktop. I have to convert them from MEGPEG to Avi for some reason to allow Movie Maker to import them. What I get now is my Divx trial has expired and it shows on the vids.
There has to be an easier way to do this so could someone please help me?
