I have a not so big problem with my mostly stock Savage 25. It's hard for me to get it to start when it's cold. What happens is, that on the first start of the day (I use a roto start, and the stock .25 engine), it only pops once, and then the roto start spins. It makes it difficult to start. Eventually, after numerous times it starts. The strange thing is, after the first tank, the engine then pops like it's supposed to, and is easier to start. I'm not sure what it could be. I replaced the one way about a month ago, so I don't think it's that. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to look at? Thanks.
 
I thought that preheating is just for new engines to allow the sleeve to expand a bit at the top. This is a fairly old engine. It runs great once it gets started, it's just hard to stop with just the one pop. Thanks for the suggestion though.
 
My k5.9 does the same thing and it has a brand new OWB and starter shaft. Once it warms up it is fine, but it is annoying. I think it's the oil from the fuel making it slip but once the metal expands from the heat it stops doing it.
 
rody take out the owb shaft and get some 400 grit sand paper Lightly! scuff the shaft. Also did you replace the shaft when you did the OWB?
 
Bankrupter: I'll give that a try. I didn't replace the shaft. I didn't know I should have done that. Thanks for the reply.
 
OK, I just tried heating the engine. I don't have a temp gun, but the engine was too hot to touch. It didn't help. I'll try lightly sanding the shaft to see if that helps. Thanks for the suggestions though guys. I appreciate it.
 
yea if the owb is new the shaft is too warn. the scuff will help. but it needs a new shaft. its is the owb slipping that is the issue but I'm going off the fact you say its ok. I don't know how well you tune and if you over crank the mill that can take out owb's fast. I am assuming you don't with my statements.

Ok, I tried lightly scuffing the shaft last Sunday, and it worked. The engine popped like it was supposed to and I had a good afternoon running my truck. I did notice that there was a lot of oil and stuff on the OWB, and the shaft when I took it apart.

This morning it was back to the same thing. The engine would pop once, and then slip. I couldn't start it. I'm guessing I should get a new starter shaft, and a new seal to try and keep as much fuel/oil out of the mechanism as possible. Does this sound reasonable?

I actually did the best fix of all, and bought another Savage to play with. It was too good of a deal to pass up.
