Hey Guys

ive been out bashing the other day and i have been told to try not to get the temp over 100*C but in the manual it said that you can have it around 110*C and it is still ok. wot r ur thoughts because i also know from go karts that it is bad to run a 2 stroke too cool as well its so hard to decide

what are you guys running because i also don't want to cook another motor

First, I want to stress the importance of not exceeding 275 degrees for the HPI 4.6.
This engine is known to be a mill that likes to run on the cooler side of temp zones.

------I highly reccommend that you keep it closer to 210 - 225 degrees and not higher than 250 degrees -------

ya there was guy up here arguing with me! lol he was saying his engine always ran about 300 and that was normal ha ha i kept telling him he was wrong, his engine lasted 3 tanks, thats it and then it threw the rod well actually the extreme heat weakened it and it snapped and piston was toast
 
yes actually i've heard that but this was a savage limited edition just stock so theres no way it should have been running 300 but he learned i guess! lol ya i would imagine the trx engines run hotter as the rev alot higher!! sorry yes i said trx lmao
 
The 4.6 loves to run cooler like doob said but the 4.1 you have to wach cause it like to creep up on temps if you are not carefull. My old 4.1 was at 250 took it for a short run (like 2mins) brought it back and it was at 350 never ran right again. lol wounder why LOL
 
My stock 4.1 runs close to 300* all day long that's where it runs best at ..

my surefire w/ Nova head runs 250* all day long.

Bottom line tune for performance ..... NOT TEMPS..

You'll get the fell (well sound) of how the engine is running. if its too lean YOULL KNOW IT by the high rev's and sputtering at high speed


You wont damage an engine is you run it at 280 ... running an engine at 212* is too cold IMO..
 
Ya I Realize What It Converts my temp guage can switch back and forth from celsis to fahreniet as most can i assume Was Just Saying Thats What I Was Told! Lol My 4.1 Runs At 230-240 Steadily And Wheelies No Prob So Thats What I Was Going By I Guess!!!!

For a k4.6... I've seen unbelievable power and boy howdy tude at 212` and lower. It's wierd.. The ambeint temp has a part in it as well.
 
I owned motors that ran anywhere from 220 up to 280 depending on the engine.Some like the higher temps, some lower...I didnt have any probs with any of them.

Hi, Iam still very new to this, and I can say I am glad to read this post. Reading the manuals, and a lot of people say watch the temp and don't ever go over ??? degrees. That makes since to me too, but If you read a different part of the manual twhere the instruct how to tune, they don't mention the temp gun, it is talked about as a optional tool, and watching the tuning videos part one and 2 they never mention the videos. So it gets confusing.

Now in real life my truck runs better at about 280 to 290 degrees (the manual for this engine says max 250 degrees) and I don't get the sputtering and I do get a nice puff of white/blue smoke when I go to full throttle. so what happens is, I make it more rich because of the temp, then next thing i m leaning it back out for power, and back and forth.

After reading this thread, and seeing how different 2, 4.6 (one K and one F) hpi engines act, the F wont hardly run at factory settings the K idles great at factory settngs, this post makes the most sinse, most all the others post mention different temp's so it makes sense to me to tune for preformance. I hope I can stick with it.

u probabally ran it too cold and the piston and sleve hadnt expanded and it ate away the sleve if u pull the motor apart have a look at the sleve and it may have heaps of scratches
