This is the greatest resource Ive found yet for nitro engine modding info

(excludeing my private tutoring from pure)

If you guys have any interest at all in nitro engines, pipes or fuel mixture, then you need to read the Tech papers at this site.

I framed them and put them on the wall next to pics of my family

Crash, I was reading a little bit at work, and that page looks like a great source of info. I think this thread should be a sticky.

Edit: Was already a sticky, guess I should have looked at that first before I typed....lol
 
There is alot of good info on that site, I use the software program and it is good for keeping info. When it comes to timing an engine I will always use my degree wheel, I find it more accurate to the degree then the software can be at times. You also need excel to run the program, it can get a little pricey.

ya, It does seem to be a replacement tool for the degree wheel.

I will stick with the wheel as well.

I wouldn't "only" use this software for timing, it all depends on how the top of the piston is finished. If the piston had a perfect 90 degree finish (most don't) then it would work perfectly. As most pistons have a slight taper at the top (to prevent catching), this changes when the port opens and closes compared to a perfect 90. The software takes measurments from the sleeve and does not take into account for this taper, it is very easy to over time an engine if you rely on the the software only. It's a great tool no doubt about it but I do not trust it 100%. JMHO.

Recent RC Model Engine Dyno Tid-Bits​

Head Button Configuration:
Recent experimentation has indicated that using a squish band with the total area sloped inward at 1 1/2 degrees had a tenancy to reduce the low/mid range of the smaller engines. With the 3.5cc engines, a squish band shaped so that the outer 50% is flat and the inner 1/2 has a 1 1/2-degree inward angle, has proven to be much better in low/mid-range output. There is an increased tendency to detonate with part of the band flat, but is much more preferable to a lack of low/mid-range power. With 50% having the angled squish, the detonation is tolerable. On engines larger than the 3.5, you can get away with the full angled squish band. On the 7.5cc engines, it appears that some flat (maybe 25-30%) is advantageous.

OTHER INTERESTING TID BITS​




Recent Tuned Exhaust Findings:

The 3.5cc engines running high nitro can gain substantial performance (both high RPM and high torque) using the CMB muffled pipe with the silencer can cut off and the stinger shortened to 3/8". The stinger should be drilled out to .280". There is a weld ridge (hidden inside) at the junction of the stinger and the rear cone.
The 7.5cc engines running high nitro can get high performance from the Irwin Nitro pipe.

New Picco EXR Drum Engines:
The Picco EXR Drum engines seem to be improved considerably by looking at the total duration of open time of the rotor. The rotor closes at 65 degrees atdc, which I believe is close to optimum for our use. The opening is later than I believe optimum. A total open duration of 215 degrees is probably closer to optimum. The Engine Analysis Program is an invaluable tool to understand and manipulate data as it relates to engine tuning subjects.

interesting info on the head button mod. this mod came up in thread a while ago & i don't think a solid verdict was reached by the hpisf guys that have the ability (& interest) to do these types of things.

wouldnt mind seeing a vid of a finished product and hearing some facts about the results & gains; not much 'head button mod' info kicking around...

did the mod to button yesterday............what do you think about throttle response?
camera phone doenst record very well, Ill shoot another later.
and ome road tests after work today

pics to show you how to time your own mill........coming soon
just need to order and receive a new mill. gonna hit SMF for a
mill. (maybe two)

The head button mod was done by extreme rc mag. they did it 3 ways. the way you have it on the dyno they lost performance. they had 3 cuts on the back like a crows foot and they saw a very marginal performance increase. the final verdict was it really didn't do that much more for the motor.
