Hope this is the right section to post. Sorry if its not. Ive been into this hobby for about 3 years just never went with nitro until recently, my girlfriend picked me up one of the new savage xl trucks 🙂 Anyway I broke it in and tuned it with 30% nitro power fuel and it ran great. I recently bought some 20% traxxas top fuel and it runs horribly I only ran it for about 30 seconds with the 20% fuel wasnt sure if I would be damaging somthing since it was running so poorly. Is the problem that I've broken it in and tuned it with 30%? Sorry if this is a silly question, love the hobby just new to the nitros :'(

Your not the first with the Traxxas fuel to have problems. If you have to change fuel you will have to change the tune especially from 30% to 20%.
Go with what worked best and get the same fuel you used first if you can.

Oh and

to the forum!

sadly my local hoby shop doesnt carry any hpi fuels. Will a traxxas 30% fuel work? or should I be ordering hpi fuel?

and thank you for the quick response and the welcome 🙂 I hope to be spending lots of time on this forum 🙂 I have apparently alot to learn :/

Man.. props for the Girlfriend!!! that bought u the savage XL my wife still hates my savage I thought she would have goten use to it by now. Well she did try it 2 weekends ago but broke my turnbuckle:duh: lol Could I??? maybe??.... start turning her over to the.......OH YAAA!! Cheers!!

No problem. If thats all you can get then well thats it then! Doesn't HAVE to be HPI fuel. I do hear bad things with Traxxas though I could be wrong.
Do they offer any other type of fuel at all? Any other LHS you can go to?

ya traxxas fuel has way to much oil in my opinion at 18% which is pretty much the highest i know of!! yes you need lubrication but not that much lol i've even heard of it causing one way bearing slippage from all the oil in it i use morgans fuels (backyard basher) which has 16% oil which is still alot but i've had no problems!! hpi is good fuel but running other brands is fine as most of us do use some other brand!! wildcat eliminator is a awsome fuel as well but i cant get it unfortunately!!

Traxxas 33% is ok. I run Odonnells, but I would run Byrons, Trinity, Werks, Nitrotane, Or Traxxas. In that order. Blue Thunder and White Lightning are the only two fuels that I have seen to cause problems.

i tried a quart of blue thunder and my temp shot up really high so when the quart was gone i went back to morgans and my temps were back to normal without any tuning so i didnt like it much but alot swear by it

thank you guys for all the help! the hobby store is HobbytownUSA in Glenburnie on ritchie highway not sure if somone is familiar with their assortments. Ill call in the morning and list their line up so I don't make mistake in buying fuel again :'(

thank you again for all your help 🙂

+1 on the blue thunder making my engines hotter. IMO Losi Nitrotane is the fuel to use. I have used HPI, Blue Thunder, Trinity, and Odonnells as well.

I have been very happy Nitrotane and Odonnells fuels. Just my .02

The best idea to remember. Go back to stock factory setting when changing fuels. This way, there's no confusion on tuning. You'll have to retune every needle, and also this will help you achieve the best tune for what fuel you're running. 🙂

i skimmed the posts doesnt seem ur question has really been answered. the reason ti was not runnign right was because the engine was tuned for 30%, you need to lean the engine out to be properly tuned for 20%.

Opps sorry I didn't say lean it lol.
:pirate:

thanks guys, ended up with 30% odonnell fuel and I'm very happy with it 🙂 Didnt have to change much on the tune and my lhs carries it yay!

I am looking to get away from blue thunder fuel and wanted to know what is the best choice out there? I am running 20% with the K4.6 motor. I was thinking odonnell 20% good choice?

maxys 30% google maxys fuel it is a company based in FL have to buy 4 gallons at a time though but with shiping included comes otu to like 26 or 27 for a gal or 30%

true, but even if you ran whatever regular 30% and went to traxxas' 30%(33% whatever lol) you would have to retune because of the amount of oil they use. i would stay away from traxxas nitro personally...

either way you would have to retune any time you change oils, its just a more significant tune when you go from anything to traxxas..
