Just got my savy back out and it fired right up! I got it to idle through my first tank of fuel. Which brings me to some new questions.

It won't idle if you put on the brakes, it dies. (Why? What do i do?)
When idling out that tank I had to hold it because the wheels spin. On the remote I turned the throttle back until they just barely moved, if I put it down it would sit there without moving. I let it do that. Was that bad on my gears? If I turn it down any lower on the remote it won't idle?

So now what??

🙂 very happy to get the first tank through it though. It it wouldn't have started raining I would be running the second tank right now. Just a little concerned being i am not sure how to get it to stop without it dieing.
 
Also let me add...

There is gas coming out of my pipe, enough that after idling a tank it left a little puddle.

Is this ok or something else i need to fix?
 
Your idling problems are because of your carburator closing too much. As you said it only dies when you hit the brakes, this is because while your throttle is at idle position, the carburator is open just enough to allow the engine to keep running. Then, when you are hitting the brakes, it closes it even more causing the motor to die. To fix this, your going to need to lean your idle-screw. The idle screw is on the back side of the carburator, very close to the engine head. Turn it in at maybe 1/8th-1/10th increments untill it gets to the point where your motor wont die at full brake power. Although, be carefull because you can lean it too much causing your engine to idle at a high RPM which could end up causing some trouble. Set the dial on your remote back to about the middle, and adjust from there.

PS: The puddle is from essential oil needed to lubricate the engine during break in. Once your motor is broken in and tuned, you will not see nearly as much goo coming out.

Messing around with the low end during break in isn't such a swell idea. If it was too rich, it would die all the time not just when he hit the brakes.
 
SDMorris, Thank you for the help and the tip. Looks like it has stopped raining, so I am going to refuel and try to get that set right during the second tank.

oh.. which way is leaning..I assume counter clockwise
 
I will go read that and see if it helps. I just tried the last idea and no help. I started it and moved the dial back to center, then I adjusted the idle screw but it didn't matter what i did with that thing, under break the engine would die.

if its dying when you apply your brakes its your idle is set to low which means the carb is closing all the way!! take off your airfilter and adjust your idle screw till theres about a 1 mm gap in the carb when in neutral so to speak!! mine did the same thing and this is how i fixed it!! hope this helps!! and yes its usually unwise to mess with the low speed unless absolutley necessary!!

to be honest I'm not even sure that matters at the moment. You should just concentrate on getting the engine broken in with a good few tanks through it.

The throttle and break are intrinsically linked together because you only have one servo to do both jobs. When I broke mine in I experienced the same thing - apply brake and the engine would die.

From where you are now all you need to worry about is getting the engine to run. You've done the first step of getting a tank through it I believe in your manual it should now say to run a couple of tanks through it whilst gently running the savage around in circles (I did figure 8's as well) just to get everything bedded in.

To be honest the first thing I'd say to do is to look at your manual and set everything back to the break in settings detailed in the break-in section before doing anything else.
 
I have it set back to spec, the best that I can tell and now it won't really run at all. It fires up then dies shortly after removing the GP starter.
 
Well your onto the next bit of the break in aren't you ...

Check your manual ... once I'd got the first tank through at idle (as you have) my manual said to start the truck ... and slowly increase the throttle to maximum ...

mine died a number of times and it needed restarting whilst I was doing this stage.

After that it says to put the truck on the ground and run it around a bit in ovals ... i did figure 8's as well ...
 
I am at drive the truck in circles for two tanks at half throttle. Problem is it won't stay running for that.
 
Ok... yipee!!!! I ran three tanks through her today. Pretty much have the break in done.

Idle still needs to be ironed out, still if i put on the brakes it dies. Also I have to very very very easily get on the throttle from a stand still or it will die.



Thanks so much for all the help so far! The pavement was wet today when I ran so I have a lot of clean up to do on it.
 
woo progress! i've ran a load more fuel through mine since break in and i'm only just starting to see the FULL potential from the engine. stick with it!
 
Looks like i have my first after break in problem. Seems my GP is out. Which is ok, I have a spare. Truck wouldn't start so I pulled the GP and tested it, (my thinking was that the batt on the GP starter was down) Turns out the GP would barely light at all.

Soooo.... I put the new GP in but now I have nothing.. won't even try to fire.
