Best place to get engine temp is??

I know most take it from the top down to the plug but the other day I tried it juust under the cooling head on the side of the crankcase and it was always 10-20 degrees hotter. Whats more accurate or best to go by?

if its under 290 F it don't matter. don't kill yourself over 10 degrees. they don't mean anthing over all

imho temp chasing isnt apart of the fun cuz all mill like to run at different temps so the only thing a temp gun is good for is during break in. just tune it to smoke/sound and let'er ripp.
