OK guys a list of symptoms for you all to diagnose and thank you all in advance. Last weekend I added a high performance air filter and hpi polished tuned pipe to my 4.6. Today i went out to take it for a burn up and down my road and the idle seemed high. I tuned the tx all the way back and the truck still wanted to walk away. So I turned down the idle and the truck just wanted to stall. Found a happy median where truck would only inch away but keep running. Next i hit the road and the truck was smoking like crazy was about to lean it out a bit when i noticed temp was already hot(grabbed my temp gun and it was like 270f) Turned off the truck and let it cool. After temp got down to like 190f I started it up again(had to adjust idle up on tx so it would start) and it would stutter start when i got on the throttle. Was wheeling like crazy on first run but on second run chug chug and then go like a bat out of heck. Stalled a couple of times on take off too. To many symptoms for me to solve on my own. Please help!!!!!

Return the TX adjustment to middle. start and adjust idle by the hour hand with runs between adjustments.

Check for leaks in the fuel lines or cracks in the tank. Another good thing to do to that motor is to seal it.

What High Performance Air Filter did you get? Is it the K&N style if so take it off the walk over open the cupboard under your sink and throw in the trash can.

What fuel are you running (% & Brand) and what Plugs (Brand & Temp)?

I am running the motor saver airfilter and mccoy plugs mc-59 med temp i believe. I am on the last little bit of HPI fuel(20% nitro 14% oil) before i switch to byron's(unsure what % i am going to run

sounds to me like adding that huge air filter & pipe gave your mill more air & thus made it run lean.

same happen to my X rtr when i replaced the plastic muffler with a THS pipe.

sounds like the leaner setting made your mill idle higher & when you turn the idle down, the mill ran lousy.

try setting your HSN & LSN back to flush & retune. may have to turn your idle up a bit & then "trim" with your Tx.

Most mills are gonna need a bit higher idle "trim" till they warm up (and maybe a little opening of the throttle to get it to start).

ok here's an update, reset needles to factory settings. lots of smoke and oil all over the place. wants to stall so i adjust the tx to keep idle high enough so it runs. when i put it on the ground the truck wants to crawl away. if i turn down the tx it stalls before the truck stops. said the heck with it lets see if i can set the needles and then worry about the idle. seems it runs ok but when the tires stop turning(ie. brakes on) it stalls. noticed that where the roto-start goes is floating around a little. is this the back plate and could this be the cause of all my problems?

You don't want to adjust the TX, leave it at neutral. This is there to adjust the throttle linkage not the engine idle. Use the Idle screw for adjusting the Idle.

Have you check the clutch shoes and springs. Sounds like it could possibly be hanging up like the springs are shot or something.

:resp: to you my friend. one of the clutch shoes was broken where the shoe joins the flywheel. didn't figure it would break there. will put it together tomorrow and re-tune. hopefully this fixes my problems.
