4.6 roto start question.

rebuilt 4.6 yesterday. Took back plate off there was a pin on back of crank, I didn't see a spring but when I tested with roto start is seemed to slip. I found a kit HPI1433 that has the pin and spring in it. Is there supposed to be a spring then the pin on the back of crankshaft? If so where can I find this spring. LHS doesn't have anything HPI.

yes that spring is needed to hold the pin against the crankshaft to enable it to grab the start shaft
have you checked a main for the parts, also check your engine inside as the spring can pop out and get stuck inside and it will damage your engine if left in there

Thanks that was my fear I had it all apart, sadly I didn't know it was in there so I found pin on counter but I fear spring is long gone. I'm gonna have to order one online. It was 100% apart so I don't think it's in the engine, I think if anything it's somewhere on the floor or rolled under something. Stupid rookie move, I know better than that. Thanks for lighting fast reply.

Take a small magnet and go over your work area, sometimes you will find it, also do engine work over a white towel so you can spot small parts more easily

Yeah I did that how I found the pin but the spring is nowhere to be found I know it's out as I had the whole engine apart, sleeve and all guess I'll have to order it and go through it again.

stuff happens, just be more careful in the future with takin things apart....

Yes indeed hard lesson learned good thing I have till Christmas to get thing thing going. Giving it to 9 year old as a present lol.

When possible, download a manual for anything you are about to take apart. Saves time in two ways:
1) educates you on what you are about to do.
2) allows you to decide not to bother with it. I find this saves the most time,lol.

I agree nothing like doing it twice, lol I downloaded the user Manual but never seen one for the engine alone.

Well good news spring was still in crankshaft the whole time lol. Got lucky but learned a lesson still ordering new spring as I want to have a new one in there. You guys are awesome thanks for the help.
