I got about 7 tanks on it now, 1st tank was idle, 2 through 5 were half throttle at short bursts running rich 2.5 to 1.5 turns out from flush. tank 6 I leaned back to flush and started with wot passes, engine temps were reading from 280 to 350 when I see the temp about 290 ill turn it off to cool, outside temp was 65 degrees with a cool breeze..... one of the temps I took said 400 got real scared and cut it off to cool down. taking the temps with a temp gun at the top of the block. I'm getting a real nice smoke trail running 20% trinity monster, just bought a fresh gallon of 25% haven't run it with the 25% yet. could it be false readings? also will I see significant temp decrease with a nova head vs the stock head? let me know what you guys think.

not at all, throttle response is real smooth, no problem with the tune just the temps are crazy. I take a lot of readings, maybe every minute or so, sometimes they hold steady around 265-280 then they get real hot. It's not even dialed in lean...haven't been below flush on the hsn yet and from what I can see I wont need to. throttle response is great, and great smoke trail. my temp gun is brand new too and it's not a cheap one either so I don't know.
 
the "half tank savage lean" is a big problem. mid tank will solve that. about the way u broke it in.......something doesn't sound quite right. i usually heat cycle mine.....run for 2 minutes and cut the engine off...let it completely cool.......for 2 tanks. that's just the way i do mine.....but is your engine modded?
 
this mill came with break in instructions that say run rich 1 or more turns out from flush. I followed their instructions as they asked.

I have a mid tank done soulja. followed the instructions for break in that came with the mill.
 
hey fred. work started up full swing, we have 4 bridges going on and a bunch of overpasses and I been working 12-14 hour days the past few weeks. Ill be on more regularly like I was before just had to get back into my regiment for work.
 
How tight was the engine? if it has alot of pinch you realy shouldn't start leaning or runing high rpm till at "least" a half gallon. This engine will not act the same as sport mills, it will take at least a gallon before it is even ready for a performance tune, that may be what is causing the high temps.

If your worried about your gun, pull the head and button and put them in te oven at 275F, let it sit for at least 15 minutes, pull it and temp it. That should be within 10 +/- and will give you a better idea if your temp gun is off.
 
thanks guys and thank robin for the great info, ill richen it up and go easy until I hit the half gallon mark. Hope I didn't do much damage to it. only ran it hard for about 1 tank, I was running it on break at the job.

Paperwork that came with mine says:
Starting Needle Settings: Set at 3 to 3 1/2 turns from closed or flush with collar.

Also says: Turn needle in until it stops, do not over tighten. Now turn out counter clockwise 10.5 to 11.5 turns.

Hmmm never follow factory break in. I do the het cycle and i don't get high temps at all. Ssounds like you did a really ruff break in

Fred mine says 3 to 3 1/2 turns out or flush with collar as well but when I closed my needle and then opened it 3 1/2 turns it was still way leaner than what I was running it at in the first place. under the break in instructions, straight from ofna it says word for word "break-in the engine in the car by running the engine at a rich master needle setting (1 turn out from flush or more if needed) run the car from a slow to fast speed with short bursts of speed. i started at almost 2.5 turns out from flush and got down to about 1.5 turns out from flush and was still getting these temps. Either way I ordered the nova cooling head, reset my hsn to flush and opened it up 2 turns rich. I'm going to clean it up tonight and run tomorrow and see what happens.
 
Mine spiked to 260 during run-in during 1 tank. it was odd it went from 220 to 260 in less than 500 feet of running. that was with the needle WAY above the tube. It also tuned well into running rage for a fully run in mill almost at the flushish setting. that is all with the 8mm carb. The carb never saw full flush. Never had it that lean. I have now junked it and got the old P3 insert carb.
 
OK update just dug the carb out of the mailer I had it in. it was fully tuned for the last tank I ran and that was almost at the 1 gal mark. It is about flush. so that was a full raceish tune for a lil above sea level running in 55 ish degree weather. running a 086 pipe with a savage header
 
glad i read that post Robin. ......but do u guys think his carb is bad????
