I broke in my first of 2 savage xl's, and I think I did a nasty job at it. It started out well, I did squirls method and every thing started going smooth.

All of a sudden my revs started going up and everytime I hit the brake even slightly I the truck would shut off. Up to this point I had only adjusted the HSN. So I adjusted the idle speed, and everything we4nt smooth except everytime i braked even slightly it would shut off, so then I started messing with the low speed needle, and then the truck started moving fast at idle, I could not get it under control after that.

I got 5 tanks through it during break in and the temps never went over 205 - 210, went back to BDC after every shut off.

Why does it shut off when braking? How do I adjust the idle? the instruction manual sucks, very hard to understand.
 
well, try to move the HSN to flush position

in the remote u will see 2 small knobs, 1 is to adjust the steering and the other is for the throuttle.
did u try to adjust the thouttle knob where u feel the car is going to move but it still not moving, i hope u understand me 🙂
 
I feel like an idiot, I didnt check the remote, I know exactly what you are talking about, but I didnt check, now I'm gonna have to wait cause I'm at work till midnight. But please keep the suggestions coming that way when I get home, I can make sure I get all my ducks in a row.

Double-O, to low, does that mean to rich or to lean.

This is my sons christmas gift, I'm glad I also bought my own, because I had a blast breaking it in, I can't wait to start bashing.

Too low is in reference to the idle which does not effect lean or rich. The idle screw holds the carb slide open to allow a little fuel and air in. If the idle is too low it will close the carb with application of the brakes. During the first tanks of your savy's life I would recomend an idle that's high but not so high it tries to drive away on you. Put it back to stock and screw it in maybe a quarter of a turn. Not too sure as I haven't played with a 5.9 but I'm sure it's close. Start tuning the HSN first always! A little rich in the beginning is good for the motor but after that lean it in about 1/8 of a turn and run it several passes to let it take effect. Smoke is your friend! If you start to lose smoke, richen back up quick. Now the LSN is tricky cause it will affect not only idle, if too lean, but your shift point as well. I would recomend not touching it till you get the hang of idle and HSN.

Idle: clockwise for higher, counter for less.
HSN: clockwise for leaner, counter for richer. Remember this affects over all fuel flow.
LSN: same as HSN but need to go smaller in adjustments and watch it close.

The remote had everything backwards, and well I figured it out when I started hitting the brakes and it was giving it gas. I started at 2 p.m. and just finished at 6:30. The roto died so I had to use a drill, and that worked like a charm once I had everything figured out.

Once I got it started that was a different story, again I used squirls method of break in, and the actual break in went smoother than yesterday. I was only able to get 3 tanks though cause my glow ignitor died, so I will continue on tomorrow.

Oh and my second one dies when I brake also so I will check the suggestions you all gave me and see what I can do.

Who needs brakes anyway, just crash land. I think I'm gonna use this as my sig line.

your doing great bro... this hobby is something new to learn, but you have the benefit of this forum & everyone's experience, so make sure you keep using your resources.

Thanks for all the help. I got some bad news, since I suck so bad at understanding nitro, and I haven't let my son play with his truck yet, I'm gonna have to buy him the e-savage. I guess the bad news is more for my wallet, LOL.

Honestly I feel terrible for my son, I keep encountering problems with the Xl's and he has had zero time on them, so I told him I was gonna buy him one that is not nitro this weekend. I guess I'm gonna have 2 XL's all for myself, if i even anticipated the level of dificulty I would have bought just one or two different ones. I'll use one as a basher and one as a beauty queen.

I will let my son enjoy my XL's though once I get them tuned perfectly.

As for my most current problem, the trucks are not responding to the remote, I have tried changing the settings, but does the same. The venom safe temp failsafe tells me my batteries are almost fully charged, it displays 6.0V on both, so I do not know what the heck is going on now. I installed bran new batteries on the remotes, so I'm sure its not that, I tried removing the fail safe and it was doing the same thing. I give it gas on the remote, and the throttle does not move at all.

Any opinions on the current problem will be gladly appreciated. And your opinions on the e-savage also, do you recommend that one or anyother electric MT.

Sorry to hear you're having that much trouble. As far as the lack of comunication, check and make sure the crystals are seated well in both the receiver and transmitter. Since you have 2, are you maybe getting the remotes confused? The crystals numbers souhould match up on both the receiver and transmitter.

thats good advice right there.... sounds like you are a bit frustrated & when i got frustrated, i overlooked little things like that.. also, make sure that you are pulling your transmitter antenna out all the way each time... does crazy things when you don't.

I'm wondering if you bought your xl's at a LHS versus the internet, cuz I'm sure if you talked to a guy at the LHS, they would be more than happy to help you 'tune up' and give you a quick tutorial before you lay out more cash on an electric..... trust me, once someone walks you through once, most of your frustration & starting & running troubles will dis appear..
 
what country, city & state are you? I'm wondering if someone here is close by & could give you a quick walk through?
 
I double checked the remotes, I even color coded them just in case that would be an issue later. I just found out today, what a coincidence, that I have a co-worker that used to work at an LHS for several years, and is a pro at tuning, so we are going to get together next weekend and he is gonna help me out.

as far as the e-savage goes, I might still get it, that way it will give my son a chance to play around when I'm not home. I already told him so I he's holding me to it.

thats good news nc.... don't give up on the nitro, once your buddy gives you the run through, you will get the hang of it very easily...
