Reason for concern?

i pulled the back plate off my os 30vg today to seal and do a little inspecting, found some minor rusting on the crank and starter shaft.image.webp

Is this going to cause me problems, or should I just seal the back plate up and run it? The engine is fairly fresh, prob only a gal run through it since break in. It has been sitting for 6 months, and I did nothing to 'winterize' other than drain the fuel from the tank, and leave it at bdc. This mill has run fantastic for me and I'd like to keep it that way. The rear bearing looks good other than a little rust on the race. Should I pull the crank and clean it? Any advise would be great cause the snow is almost gone here now and I'm getting itchy to fire it up soon.
 
Rust is never good, if rust is on the race chances are it's on the bearings and other parts too. It might pay to check it out a little more to possibly save you some money down the road, especially since its a newer engine. Any rust is bad so if you would be able to get serious rust off it might prolong the life of the engine.
Do you use after run oil?

No I don't run after run oil, but by the looks of my internals I think it's time to start. I'm fairly new to the forum, learning a lot about repairs/maintenance. Just need to decide if I should replace the bearing or not. It's stupid expensive to replace with an 'os' bearing and I don't have a caliper to properly measure. Does anyone know the size of the rear crank bearing for an os 30? I would def feel better replacing it.
 
I just clicked on the thing at the top for category and the numbers looked right. Had to go back and double check before I shot you the link. Lol. I'm sure you can get it cheaper, but I really like Tower's customer support

Ya I've ordered a few things from them before and had no problems. I'm in northern Ontario so I try to get my stuff sent to me from this side of the border. Just to save on shipping. But the selection and price of some of companies in the US make it tough to beat.
 
I don't blame you. I get stuff from Tower, Amazon or my LHS most of the time. I prefer to shop local, but the interwebs is making that increasingly difficult.

Ya my LHS is a two hour drive and they've always been quicker to try and sell me expensive, anodized, heavy parts for my savy instead of the improvements I really need. This forum, combined with Internet shopping is my LHS now.
 
Most of my engines end up looking like that after the winter months. I put a few drops of ARO in them after the last run of the year, which helps a lot. When I look inside the engines in my "dead engine" drawer, I see a lot more rust there.

Unless you totally pickle the engine and store it in an air tight container, your going to see a bit of rust/corrosion in there after sitting for months. I used to REALLY care about things and I used to do just that at the end of the year. I'd tear the engine apart, clean everything completely, saturate the crap out of it with oil and put them in a ziplock, then suck the air out of them as best I could.

Now, I just put a few drops in the glow plug and carb intake, pull the cord a few times, rotate the crank so the exhaust port is just closed, then shelve it. I don't care as much about rust/corrosion these days and they seem to run just fine.

So what your saying is I prob shouldn't bother taking it apart any further? It didn't really have me too worried. I just thought I'd get opinions from some people here who have looked into more nitro engines than I have. I am going to get some ARO and start using that during its rest periods. thanks for the input
 
I've never bothered to look in the back plate, but come spring, I put an extra drop or two of ARO in and go to play. But I'm sure most people would freak if they knew some of the stuff I do. Lol. But I've read enough out of Olds, I'd say he can be trusted.

From what little rust I see, it's should be fine. The steel bits in these engines are very raw steel. It doesn't take much for a bit of surface rust to show up. I mean, if I park my 1:1 car for a week, you can see trace rust on the face of the brake discs show up. Similar issue here.

If the rust was thick and covering the entire steel bits, then you may have some concern about the bearings. Yours look like my engines that I run without a seconds thought.
