What have you tried in your diffs?

Figured id share a bit more....

been playing around with my diff oil/grease.
usually use what i got on the shelf at home, lots of choices but for a change instead of using bearing grease I'm trying lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer.

Mabey a bad idea, mabey not. Anyone else use it?

i could be wrong, but thinking mabey it gives a better "locking" effect when one tire is slipping and the other is not, for reasons we can discuss.

any type of oil should work i would think, its there to lube and add resistance. maybe even chainsaw bar oil would work.
myself i use auto grease, its the least likely to start leaking which i like.

i use:

stock bearings
hpi alloy case w/shims
ofna crosspins
4-spyder gears
HypoyC gear oil

All purpose automotive grease to outer diff gear/pinion.

and ive never stripped a diff to date!

I use 10k diff fluid front and back in my CEN diffs.

Yeah baddasz, i was keeping in mind that any liquid might leak, granted this lucas is very thick and sticky, when it gets hot at high rpm's it could leak, if it holds it viscosity tho it should not leak at all.

Ill run it for a few gals and open up the diffs and let y'all know how it held up.. Id rather try with brand new diffs to see how much more/less friction damage i see, but ah well.

If your o-rings in your diff are good no fluid should leak out. I run 7k silicone diff fluid in my front and 2 - 3k in the back. the back is like water when it goes in. The only time I have lost any was when I had a bad o-ring. Usualy never leaks (ive got in the habit of changing my o-rings everytime i rebuild) anymore though

i run 10k front and back in ofna diff fluid no issues of leaking unless i have some loose screws or a bad oring i don't leak fluid

I run 50,000 front and 20,000 rear for bashing and racing. Never tried just auto grease but after a gallon of running my diffs are still full, I never had a problem with them leaking. But I don't run less than 20,000 either.

:resp:This might be dumb question (sorry) But my Savage X dosn't have any fluid in the front or rear differentials, just a light coating of grease on the gears. My center differential has nothing in it at all. Is this like that from the factory or has mine leaked out. If it has leaked out, how much do you put in the front and rear, and how much in the center diff. I've only had the truck for a year. And it's sat all winter.

its like that from the factory (small amount of grease). the trans needs no lube, just a shot of wd40 from time to time. And i fill the diff right up so its full to the top of the spider gears.

I have used 2,3,5,7,10,25,30,and 50 K silicone diff fluids. never had a diff go only ring and pinions. shimmed and greased of course

Ok, thanks, I didn't know that. I was surprised when I looked in and seen no fluid. I'm going to tear them all down and clean em up one day. I'll fill er up and let her go. Do you have to silicone around the bottom or anything to keep it from leaking around the skid plate or no. Thanks.

oh, the grease or oil/silicone goes inside the diff cup, not the bulkhead =)

I do like to add auto/lithium grease to the outside of the diff cups. I also place a bead of gasket maker between the plastic and alloy skid plates to keep out grass and dirt.

hmmm bead of gasket maker...good idea!

gasket maker isnt necassary man, simply run a bead of grease along where the skid meets with the bulkhead. This acts as a gasket, and is not a mess like "gasket-maker" when you go back to it for a fix.

I also use a very small bead of ultra copper to seal my bulkheads around the bottom plates and just a small amount of heavy auto grease on the ring gear. i started using grease, but thats what make the real messes for me, my home made gaskets come off very easy with the wd-40 residue i leave on the plates.
