Hi all, first, I want to thank everyone for their countless number of posts that helped me along with this build. I know I didnt post much on it, but I did wear out that search function and found some great info.

On a surprising turn in Feb weather, it was around 52 deg today (Northern, IL). They have been predicting this for the last week. So it was time to do what I had to do to take advantage of the weather.

Around noon, I started my procedures.
Got everything in order and was ready to fire this Xss up.

I primed the lines with fuels and was ready to start pulling.
After several tries, I got her running.
I wasnt sure what breakin method I was going to use, but my goal was to get it running on a stand and take it from there.

A couple things about my first tank that I want to address.

#1-While testing the radio functions, I had the push the brake and engine dies issue.

#2- When idling on the stand, and when on the ground, the wheels/truck are always moving.

#1 fix-I quickly went to my laptop and found some posts on a idle issue. Turned that a bit and quickly solved that problem.(need that 1mm gap).
Now I can activate the brakes, and the engine still runs.

#2-This is still an issue after two tanks. It was happening before I adjusted the idle screw, so I know that wasnt it. Any thoughts?

----

I did two tanks today. Both of them went really well. I always had smoke (never went past 1/2 throttle). At first I had a sock on the head, and it was idling on a stand in the garage(with door open) and I actually had temps near 275. However, with the sock off and the truck on the open air, I was able to maintain that 200 degree mark.

on one of my 1/2 throttle passes, I lost the nut that holds the tire on.
Still cant find it, but I am glad I had a spare. Do those need locktite as well??? I couldnt figure out why my tired kept going while my truck was slowing down. :lmao3:

Other then that, no real issues. I was very excited to be out today.
My wife came out at one point and asked if this thing was going to have a muffler. Said it was really loud:dumb:.
But whatever.

Also, I was running the air filter and tube just stuck on the carb, no ziptie holding it on. Will this cause air leak. Is a issue. I hate wasting zip ties. Suggest something else?

I think thats it for now, much is running thru my head, but I cant type it all out.
Unfortunately, I think the weather wont be this nice again for some time, but atleast I got 2 tanks in!

Thoughts? Comments?
Thanks everyone!

Rob

Sounds like your off to a good start. First off, about the air filter, you definately need to zip-tie it or secure it some way. If not, it'll pop off while running and then you'll end up sucking something into the motor. And you don't want to ruin the motor since you just started to break it in and it's new. You shouldn't have to lock-tite the wheel nut. It should be a locknut already with the rubber or plastic stuff in the end. Also, lock-tite will eat away at the rubber/plastic. I personally lock-tite mine anyways and haven't had any problems with them. I only use a little bit. Hope this is some helpful info.

1. For right now I wouln't worry too much about the tires moving while at an idle. It's still breaking in and it might be helpful to leave it idleing a bit high for while.
2. The nuts should stay on. They do wear out but since it was a new truck I can only assume it was loose from the git go. Crank them down, shouldn't need loctite as it is a nylock nut.

3. I will leave the wifey comment to myself....:Radioactive: or maybe ask her if she would like to drive.

4. After you get your carb dialed in, make sure you never run without a zip tie. Nothing like finding your air filter on a dusty dirty track after running 10 tanks of fuel....not good.

5. Be patient with your breakin. Its tough to not want to go full pull on it but it will pay off in the end.

it would be the idle and or the clutch. you said Xss so did you have issues installing the clutch and stretch out the springs?

As the others said zip ties are cheap go buy a bag at the hardware store. Not the LHS... Cheaper by far!
Also like blaze said I'm not afraid to put a good snugging on my wheels. No loctite here too.

Thanks for the tips on the zip tie. I don't intend on doing this for the whole time, just did it today while making sure I had the idle good so it didnt die.

The clutch shoes. I didnt have too much of an issue installing them. The photos seemed a little off at first. But once I figured it out, it was easy.
Now the stretching part, I didnt do anything other then pull them a bit and make sure they snapped back. Could this be the issue?

ive never ran a zip tie on my airfilter. ive bashed hard and long without any troubles. i guess it couldnt hurt i just like being able to pop it of put some ARO in and put it back on.

being another decent day out, I took the truck to a open parking lot with hopes of getting a couple more tanks in.
It was only near 40 today, so the cut sock theory worked really well.
Following the Squirrels break in guide(no arguments on this method please) with a mixture of HPI, I was able to complete my tanks today.
Today was much better then yesterday, and actually had fun!
The WOT tank started to be unsuccessful because when I got to WOT, the truck would die. So I had to start adjusting the HSN a little earlier then I thought.

Man, this truck hauls a$$. I know this is all new to me, but this is what I was looking for.
My Emaxx was nothing compared to this truck, and I am not even done tuning yet.

I killed my first quart of nitro, but it was fun!

Had some issues with my brakes (non existent on my 5th tank) but I am sure it just needs an adjustment or upgraded. I will search that out.

Overall, I am very very satisfied with my purchase and build.
I can see some small stuff I want to do, but looking at the weather, it looks like the cold will be back and I will have plenty of time for adjustments and add-ons.

The wheels don't spin as much anymore when its on the stand. And when the truck is on the ground, it really doesnt try to move. Hopefully thats just the clutch breaking in, and not me killing something.

I think thats it for now!

robo! welcome to the greatest forum ever!!! lol congrats on the new truck! hopefully you will love your savage as much as the rest of us do!!! I also put a small amount of locktite on the wheel nuts, but i put it close to the wheel, so it barely gets on the nut, but just enough to hold it on... with the ziptie on the air filter vs. getting it off easy after runs, i run mine with a ziptie, just not SUPER snug, snug enough to hold it on, but loose enough to be able to pull it off with a lil bit of effort! BEST OF LUCK!!!
