Starter shaft back plate

I have a newer hex style roto start and was wondering once I get my truck started if the pin on the crank is supposed to disengage the starter shaft on the back plate

see that shaft with the indent that ramps inside? that rides against a pin and spring inside the engine crankshaft and once started it disengages and just sits still or gently rotates until you need to start your rig again
