Spur gear... what did I do wrong?

Hey, guys new member here. I've got a used Savage SS that I put a 4.6 (out of a Hellfire) into. Long story short, it took me awhile to get this thing running (cracked the motor plate after it wheelied with the body off while tuning... fixed... found out it had the wrong glow plug in it, OS instead of MC, they were too short, truck kept stalling). Anyway, finally got it running and tuned in at my buddies track and after a brief runaway (I have no idea, charged the reciever pack the night before) and it was running good. Lot's of power. But then my buddy told me to shut it down, cuz the clutch shoes were probably fried. I was getting aggrevated.
Then I noticed that the adjusting locknut on the spur gear was way loose from where I had set it (had to change the spur gear after the truck wheelied and smacked the motor/broken plate), so I figured maybe it was set too loose (even though I did everything in the manual). So I tightened it. After running less than a minute, it loosened up again. So this time I tightened it all the way down without backing off the half turn. Shortly after, I heard a *tink*tink*tink and saw the the clutch bell ate a canyon into the spur gear teeth.
Well I know tightening the thing all the way down probably wasn't the "best" idea, but why did my locknut keep loosening up? Nut stripped? Anyone else have this problem? Is it possible the gear mesh was too tight? I did the paper trick (but I didn't know about folding it over). What would you say I did wrong?

Mmm tuff one here-pics would help.
I always run my slipper on spur all the way tight so I don't think thats the problem.
It is possible to get the mesh too tight so I would lean towards that.
Also is the alignment fore and aft of clutch bell and spur correct?
Oh and welcome to the forum too-we will get you fixed up sooner or later!

I set up the clutch according to the manual. The shop didn't have the 5x7.5x3mm washer to go between the screw and the clutch bell, but I had extra ones of the 5x10x.5mm (from between the clutch and the bearing) so I used 6 of those stacked and it measured exactly 3mm (yeah, that may be a hacky thing to do, but I didn't have the right parts). My friend looked at it and told me "he thought I had too much movement", but I figured the manual was right. I'll measure how much it slides and get pics tommorrow. He suggested I add 2 more washers.
But I'm wondering if my mesh setting was too close to begin with. I used the paper trick like in the manual, but I've read on here that maybe I should've folded the paper over, which I didn't.
It shaved the teeth right down the center leaving remains on both sides.

is your lock nut still good? if the rubberish lock ring is bad, that may be leading to your problem.

If the nut went bad would that cause it to eat up the teeth? I bought a pack of new nuts today but may try remeshing the cb and spur. Any suggestions on doing it right? The manual shows what it looks like with a cutaway view, and doing the paperstrip trick (should I fold it?) but when doing it, I honestly can't see anything.

sounds like the mesh to me youll go through a spur gear before you become profiecent at the mesh , the paper trick works so keep at it . and lock tight the mounts for sure.

i agree with everyone here sounds like the mesh wasnt right!! and welcome to the forum!!

was it idled up to high.mine was and it heated up the cb and melted the spur.took me awhile to figure that out.i fold a peice of paper 3 times and push the cb into the spur hard and its always a perfect match for me

I'm not sure if I read right but if you are missing the washer with the hex shaped inner hole that goes between the spur and spring you will have issues with that nut loosening.

I had the washer between the spring and nut, not between the spur and spring.

Remounted a new spur gear, meshed it correctly, switched the washer, now it's all good. Thanks guys.
