hey guys, driving a k4.6 with a 3 speed tranny, any opinions about useing a metal spur gear over the stock. Any pros or cons to either... Thanks:drunk:

i ran a composite spur for about a year, never stripped. installed a metal and ran it crazy last weekend.

just wanted to try/upgrade to metal. pretty un-eventfull, i didnt notice any difference in running or anything, but i like it.

guess it comes down to preference maybe, but peeps i talk to that run metal love the metal.

I have always run plastic because I think it is a good weak link in the drivetrain,
I would rather strip a spur gear over trashing a tranny...but I do know a few guys who run metal and have not had any problems.

It's down to your own preference, you wont gain or loose any performance from using plastic over metal spur gears.

on a side-note, ive seen posts where peeps have grenaded a tranny & others grenade a steel diff when running a composite gear. ive also seen threads where a composite gear has melted if meshed too tight.

my experience with a composite spur: ive run it now on 2 modded mills and snapped & bent several bonz without any damage to the spur.

imo a composite gear is too strong to create a weak point (if meshed properly). Like Mickey said, slipper clutch would slip before your spur gear explodes as long as you have a good mesh & adjust the slipper spring & nut properly.

i think it really does come down to "spur gear preference" like you say in your thread title.
