I brought an XL 2 weeks ago and have run nearly a galon through the engine. I have started leaning the engine out. I have turned the high speed needle around 5/8 of a turn. Went it revs up, it hesiates and then shifts to second then third. It is also very slow off the line and I have turned the low speed needle now 1/2 a turn. No wheelies at this stage. At this stage I haven't altered the 3 speed box as I wanted to get the engine running right. BTW - I live in Sydney and it's around 35 degrees celcius at the moment. I am sure this will effect the cars performance. Any feedback will help.

First off welcome to the forum! You have come to the right place to get answers to all your questions. Good job on getting the engine tuned right before you mess with the tranny, you are on the right track. Sounds to me like you may be a little to rich and I would continue to lean out the HSN until the engine is running well and you have good smoke coming out of the pipe. Once that is done then adjust the LSN in little increments until you get the low end performance you want. These motors are sensitive to the weather. It seems the 5.9 is difficult to tune.
I leaned the HSN out today and it hit 310 degree F. Also started to lean out the LSN 1/2 a turn in total and noticed a bit more pick up but no wheelies. Still when it approaches the shift point it hesitates a lot then shifts.
I am scared the engine will detonate.
I am unsure what to do now. I am sure the ambient temperature isn't helping. I am best not to run the truck on 35-40 degree Celsius days?
