Just wanted to share my modified Savage. I used various parts from different brands:

1. Lower Arms from Tekno MT48.3
2. Shock Towers From HPI Hellfire
3. Damper Set (all rear) from Mugen MBX7T
4. Battery Box and Mud Guards from TLR
5. ALZA CD and Carbon Fiber Chassis
7. Skid Plate and Rollcage from HPI Super 5SC Flux

Below are the parts I used for the Tekno Arms. Please note that the Arms need to be trimmed to fit the bulkheads:


1. Rear Hinge Pins:
  • Four (4) Rear Outter Hinge Pins (Part # TKR5034)
2. Hubs:
  • Two (2) Front Spindle Carriers (Part #TKR5194)
  • Two (2) Front Hub Spindles (Part # TKR5193)
  • Two (2) Rear Hub Carriers (Part # TKR5199)
  • Four (4) Aluminum Anodized Arm Bushings (Part # TKR5055A)
  • Four (4) Aluminum Anodized Spindle Bushings (Part # TKR5054A)
  • Four (4) M4x14mm Button Head Screws (Part # TKR1445)
  • Four (4) M4x16mm Button Head Screws (Part # TKR1447)
  • Four (4) M3x8mm Washers (Part # TKR1221)
  • Eight (8) Wheelbase Shims (Part # TKR5165 Partial, Shims Only)
  • Twelve (12) M3x4mm Set Screws (Part # TKR1601)
  • Two (2) M3x6mm Button Head Screws (Part # TKR1401)
3. Arms:
  • Two (2) Front Suspension Arms (Part # TKR5436)
  • Two (2) Rear Suspension Arms (Part # TKR5430)
4. Camber links:
  • Two (2) Front Camber Link Turnbuckles (Part # TKR5451)

  • Four (4) 6.8mm Pivot Balls (Part # TKR5052A)

4. Steering Link:
  • M4x101mm Titanium Turnbuckles - Lunsford Racing (or any steel equivalent brand)
  • Kyosho 6.8mm Rodend (Part# KYO97051)

  • Tekno RC 6.8mm Rod End Set (Part#TKR5188)
5. Driveshafts:
  • Tekno RC Universal Driveshaft Set (Part# TKR5298)
6. DiffCups:
  • HPI Front Wheel Axle Shaft (Part # HPI101060)

7. Shocks:

9. Tower:
  • Two (2) Hellfire HD Shock Tower (Part #HPI86587)

Not sure if how this mod is going to work if compatible with the stock towers but here is the link on how I got the Hellfire Shock Tower mod to fit on the Savage:

The Diffs cups need to be replaced as well to ensure accurate fit from the Universals:

Ok. Those are some good pics and explanations on what to do. I did notice one thing that I highly suggest you do. I noticed in the second to last pic of the bulk opened up with the diff showing, that you are usin the plastic diff cups. I highly suggest usin the alum diff cups, especially since your runnin brushless power.

Do you bash or race? I'd be worried about all that truck with the arms trimmed that way. Not a lot of material left for strength at the hinge pins.

Looks great though for some track running!
 
Thanks for the build info and pic's! that looks to have worked out very well for you, must of had a parts tecno truggy laying around i gess with all those parts.

I just built a savage with all kyosho gear, engine/clutch/pull start, header/pipe, complete diffs, and axle shafts/stubs... it was so easy and eliminated the parts suplies issue hpi is now known for.

To add to the plastic vs alloy diff cups, i kinda prefer the universal 1/8 buggy plastic cups over hpi alloy cup, the hpi cups are not very well layed out with too many shims and moving parts. As 4 spiders are strong no mater what cups you use it dosednt mater so much as long as you got 8mm outter bearings vs the junk 10mm units.

Thanks! Mostly race while I use my Tekno MT for bashing :) I doubled up the hingepin braces and might get a custom made thicker brace.

After lookin at and studying the pics more closely of the 2 A-arms, after trimming the Tekno arms down, there's still about the same amount of "meat" in the arms where the pin goes through.

The HPI arm has double/triple the amount of material on the leading edge of the arm for the hinge pin hole. That was where I was talking about.

I have been looking at doing this mod for a while. I have a whole lot of parts from a onfa truggy but I am wondering if the cvd axles are going to stand up to 6s power ? as they are quite a bit smaller than the flux hp axles and drive cups

So far the Tekno has the thickest universals. I had a look at Mugen and they are thin.

Mine is still holding up pretty far :) I’ll see how far it can take a beating lol. At the moment I am still running in 4S.

I cart wheeled a couple of times and immediately thought of the front arms. I had a quick inspection and it is still in one piece though

Thanks for more info on parts and and bash test session with an update on how they held up. The universals, is that per pair (front or rear) or for all 4 (front & rear)? And do you have to use those style/type of 17mm hex hubs or can you use the factory hex hubs? What's the website you ordered the parts from? Those are some good prices from what I've seen so far.
 
They are a pair per pack, so you need to buy 2 to get a complete set. I mostly get my spares from Dollar Hobbyz, I also got those screenshots from their website.

You need the 17mm buggy / truggy hex hubs for the universals. The ones from HPI are too fat and the pins won't line up. Hex hubs from Mugen will work aside from Tekno.

Another thing to note is with the lower arms, you need to also get a specific Shock Perch and rod ends, not sure if the stock ones will fit though:

Hi all! Just thought I’d update my mod.

Another alternative is to trim some materials from the bulkhead INSTEAD of trimming some materials from the Tekno Arms…if I need to swap worn out / damaged arms I can easily get one without the need to trim the material:

Are you still running this thing man? I got all these parts laying around and a few savage Flux xl's. How has it held up for you or if you sold it how well did it do over time?

I still have it and yes held up through the test of time; unless otherwise I hit a pole or a concrete post I am sure it will be either a bent hinge pin or warped lower arm holes.

Still doing 15-20 feet jumps but no crazy stunts.
