I know that burnin up spur gears is part of the game but I find everytime I try to mod my truck it becomes very unreliable and I end up going back. I mostly burn through spur gears when this happens. I originaly tried such a simple mod as 55 weight shock oil. The truck got really bouncy and I was the spur gear killer. They would last for only maybe two to three tanks and sometimes not even that. Went back to 25 weight and everything went back to normal....truck was great. I decided to put in the aluminum adjustable shocks, RPM offset wheels with masher low profile tires, a tuned pipe, and a golden horizons heat sink motor mount. The truck ate a dog bone , a spur gear, and a diff in less than half a tank. Then I got her all fixed up and took it out again and it burned out another spur gear in about a quarter tank. The gear mesh is fine, I have had multiple shops and people make sure I am not screwing that up. Any ideas? It is getting really frustrating to not be able to drive or mod my truck. In stock trim it runs fine.

Hey Killer, sorry to hear that, but lets get you fixed up.

you've got some separate (an un-related issues going on here)

Let's figure out the spur gear first. Can you show a pic of your burned up spur gear? are the teeth getting chewed up or is the center of the gear getting spun out/melted?

Your spur gear getting grenaded is gonna come down to a few most common issues:
1. (most common) Mesh.
2. damaged motor plate
3. damaged motor mount.
4. loose motor mount screws (motor moves while truck is running).
5. slipper nut/clutch not tight enough causing the spur gear to spin on the shaft & burn out the middle of the gear.

to troubleshoot the dogbone & diff, we'll need to know what conditions you were runnin the truck in,

but lets get the spur figured out first and move on from there.

The conditions of where you run will also tell us about the spur gear problem. Running in grass makes a lot of resistance and the engine tends to heat up more.

Thanks for jumpin in here to help guys. So the spur gears are rippin the teeth off. I have been running the gear tightened right up as per a suggestion from a shop close by here. All the guys at that shop run their savages that way and I figured if it was working for them then I should be fine. The motor plate seems undamaged (its pretty new, it cracked a few weeks back). The motor mount is brand new with only half a tank on it but it is not an HPI part. My mounting screws are all locktighed in. And as for the mesh I had two separate experienced savage owners check the mesh for me right before the last one grenaded. But it went anyways. Terrain I like to run in is anything with some jumps. The spot I ripped the last one out at was a school with a nice combination of some big jumps, grass (a little long), and some gravel. The place I was at that tore up the diff, and all that other stuff was a construction yard sorta place with jumps a gravel. Both places I run pretty regularly with little troubles. The plate that the spur gear goes onto has a wobble to it also from a rock getting jammed in it......suspect?

If the slipper is tightened down, then you will definitely have a problem with jumps. The point of the slipper is to let the spur gear slip on jumps so you don't ruin the spur gear. With it tightened down it defeats the purpose.
How much of a wobble is it? Mine has very little wobble.

id say its worth replacing the slipper plate, maybe there is a mis-alignment there that is causing the spur teeth to get chewed off given that your mesh, plate & mount are good.

actually coby you can tighten your slipper down all the way and jump your truck without issue. its the landing that can cause problems if your tires make contact while your under throttle or brake power.

if you land with your throttle/brake in neutral position with the slipper tightened down you'll be fine. land under power and you'll likely cause damage. 😛eace:

Oh okay, lol. Didn't know that. Thanks! :duh:

Ok so I am going to put in a new slipper plate cause they are cheap and it eliminates that as part of the problem. It also has a small chunk missing from the first time I stripped a spur gear. It was caused by a rock getting jammed between that plate and the tranny housing. I think that I will also try leaving the spur gear a quarter turn out to eliminate myself as the problem to. I know that I don't let it land under power or under braking but I do love to spin the truck and hammer on the throttle in gravel to watch the gravel fly.......I'm sure thats not good on it. Thanks again for your help guys. I will make the repairs and get back to you in the next day or so.
