Short of taking the diff apart and looking at it, is there any way to tell if the diff is bad?

thanks

Eric

so inspection is pretty simple. most times its the pinion our the drive gear.

The thing to look for is a tight gear mesh, check for play side to side on drive gear and front to back on pinion.

The x has easy acess diff houseing.

I have been checking for play in my diffs every other tank lately trying to catch it before it tears up the gears.

my x After 1 gallon on new gears it needed two shimms on drive gear. Pinion was fine.

my 25 new parts the pinion needed three shimms.

The best way I have found to shim the diffs properly is to take the bulkhead out. you can see how the ring and pinion mesh up much clearer. I use to tear up a lot of diffs. Even trying to shim them without taking the bulkhead out. If you are shimming and still tearing pinions up try pulling the bulkhead and you will see what I mean about how much better of a job you will get. I haven't tore one up since.
You can also check your diffs by grabbing both front wheels and roll the back wheels on the carpet and then try the opposite.
