Possible Bad Savage Transmission??

Aloha All,

Question, when I put my truck on the ground running or not should I be able
to push my truck backwards?? I swear I could push if backwards before. I took it to the park yesterday to run it and noticed that if I tried to push it back wards the tires would lock up, I am able to push it forward.
What I checked:
1 If I just spin 1 tire at a time it goes both way
2 If I spin 1 front and rear tire kitty corner i'm ok
3 If I spin both front or both back or all 4 it only goes forward and locks when I spin it in the reverse direction
4 Checked fly wheel and all other visual gears and looked ok
5 if I spin the fly wheel to make the car go forward it's ok
6 if I spin the fly wheel to make the car go backwards it locks up after a very short turn.

Is it possible that my transmission is going bad?

Also what I noticed and not sure if this problem and my above issue is related
to transmission problem, but my truck does not shift to second anymore it just stays in first gear and when it reaches top speed it starts whining.
I haven't tried adjusting the HSN to see if it is just a tuning issue.

sounds like it might be a clutch issue to me.

I believe you are right about it being my clutch, had to find were it was first. LOL and as I turn the gears that is were it seems to be hanging. I looked up for some replacement parts and for my model of truck Savage 21/25 thee is like 4 different clutches there are 15T, 17T,18T, and 19T. is it better to have more tooth or less??

i believe you are looking at clutch bells the shoes are what you need to look for. here is what i have been using with good results http://www.integy.com/st_prod.html?p_prodid=4057&p_catid=59 there are better options out there but these work and are cheap

Check maybe the set screw holding clutch onto the shaft might have backed out.

Just to confirm is this the clutch? the one with the red boarder?

yes that is your clutch bell and the clutch shoes are right behind the bell

Ok so my bro and I took the truck apart today removed the engine and checked out he clutch, it was ok, traced it back to the transmission. The bearing that has the screw to adjust the shifting also has a set screw and that
screw came out and was causing it to lock up in reverse. also the screw head
was rounded out so I have to get a new one. This was a great learning experience for us. kind a learn a lot by taking it a part and putting it back.

I will check my hobby store tomorrow to see if they sell the set screw.

Got my replacement set screw and installed it today, I will attempt to run it tomorrow morning after work. Also bought an El Camino body, completed the cut out just need to paint. only thing left to buy is wheels and tires😀Jjam:
