What is the best way to tell if my XL is even using 2nd gear? I can only hear it shift once and i'm sure it's 3rd because it gets going extremely fast. I can't imagine it going any faster for top speed LOL. It just doesn't seem to be using 2nd gear, I loosened it a half turn on two seperate occasions. Is it now too loose? I originally set it to what the manual says BEFORE the two times that I loosened it, none of those settings seemed to have an affect. Anybody have any tips or setting suggestions for this transmission?

It took about a gallan of nitro run thru my xl before it decided to kick into third gear. And a very, very long stright mall parking lot.:drunk:

This is an old post but it turns out my tranny was skipping second gear. The factory settings had the spring way tighter than 3rd so it never would have been able to use it. I reset it to "factory" specs from the book only to find out they didn't work either, and I figured it out when I used a screwdriver to manually extend the clutch piece for second. After that I just set the gears by feel, on the tension it took to get them to extend. I actually got it very close this way and only had to fine tune it after that. Sometimes "factory" doesn't mean right LOL. I think I just got a funky spring in that one or something and that is why it was so much different than the factory specs. It works great now.

In my savagel xl Manual it stated that too ajust the 2 speed you had too tear into the transmission. Sooo i never went there. LOL:Mr.confused:

It sound like a lot of work but once you do it once you see how easy it really is. I had mine apart like 4 times before I got it just right LOL. Once you see how it works you can do it in like 15 minutes. Plus someday you might have to do it anyway if you break something so at least you'll know how it works when the time comes.

you don't have to open the trans to adjust a 2 speed. take the shift screw all the way out, don't lose the spring or ball, and turn it in 1.5 turns, thats your stock setting. also you trans may have issues shifting if you have a lousy tune. make sure you have a decent tune before you start messing with your shift point

Yes , i meant too say 2nd speed. After i got it tuned just about right it started changing gears great. :nicks:
