Hello everyone,

I’m new here, please let me know if I doing something incorrectly.

I bought a fairly used savage from a guy and it came with lots of spare parts. From what I can tell it seems this might be the savage x ss but I’m not entirely sure. I want to know what upgrades would be beneficial before dropping in a big block engine. Should I upgrade the drivetrain to modern savage x components? Also I wonder if there might be any missing parts, if there is any visible areas missing parts please let me know.

Any help is appreciated, I have done nitros before but I’m very new to the savage community.

Welcome aboard.

You do have a Savage X - whether it's an SS or not, I haven't a clue.
It really doesn't matter, Savages have a lot of forward / backward compatibility.
Any Savage X manual will work for you.
You can download them from hpiracing.com.

Upgrades at this point aren't necessary - you got enough stuff to procure to get it on the road.
What type of driving style are you looking to do - general bashing / big air / racing friends?

The tires don't look to be OEM Savage - but they look OK

Needs (which you may or may not already have in your spare parts):
Engine / exhaust header (+ spring) / pipe / flywheel / clutch / clutch bell
Engine mount
4 4mm fine thread allen head screws for the engine plate (ties the plate to TVP's and 4 more for the engine mount)
3mm fine thread allen head screws to affix the engine to the mount

Receiver
Battery Hump Pack
Fuel tank
Exterior fuel tank mount (sometimes you need 1 part - but gotta buy an entire tree to obtain it)
Throttle linkage post - (may or may not be part of above tree)
Throttle linkage
Plastic battery/receiver cover
I can't see enough of the right side to tell, but the wire/spring that ties down the pipe to the post

Personally, I would trash the SF-1 throttle servo and replace it with the current steering servo (guessing it's an SF-2) and replace the steering servo with something stronger.

Thanks for the reply, good to know it is ready for more power, I’m thinking about getting an lrp whenever they’re available again in my area.

I have a local track where I go occasionally so that’s the driving style I’m probably aiming for most. I have the stock rims and tires aswell so that should be fine.

Also thanks for letting me know what screw dimensions I need for the engine, none of the original were included.

Will be looking into the spares to see if anything you mentioned is missing and might replace the throttle servo. The steering servo is a futaba so might stick to that one. My last question would be what the third servo mount is for, reverse gear on the 3-speed transmission?

I’m guessing this one has the 2-speed, not sure though.

Yours looks to be a 3-speed (see that piece of rubber on the left side of the tranny?).
You have 3 holes in the side of that tranny - 2-speeds have 2 holes.

You are correct - the 3rd servo mount is for reverse - both the 2 or 3-speed can be adapted to utilize a reverse module.

If you already have a decent/strong steering servo, stick with it.
The SF-1 always seemed to come up short in the braking department (at least to me). whereas the original steering servo (the SF-2) fit the throttle bill.

Engine:
Two thumbs up concerning your thought about installing an LRP.
I have a .32 in one of mine and it's a beast.
I gear mine tall and set my Savages suspension up so that they don't pull wheelies, and mine still manages to pull the front wheels off the ground while hauling down the straight in 2nd gear.

Tires:
This is just my personal opinion.... especially since you mentioned "I have a local track where I go occasionally".
I would at some point dump the MT style tires and the 12mm hubs that go with them.
Get a 17mm adapter set like this (below) and something akin to Pro-Line Holeshot or JConcept truggy tires.
You'll shave about 3/4 of a pound off the weight of the truck and improve handling.
Besides, 12mm MT tires are getting hard to find and the 17mm arrangement will better handle the LRP's power. But, drive the snot out of what you already got...
