I just bought a Savage 4.6 RTR last thursday and broke it in friday and saturday. Than saturday night my cousin and i wear flying around a nearby park worked pretty good. Since than i have yet to drive it because no matter what i adjust the engine will start and idle fine but than it will get quieter and just cut out. i've put it back to factory settings and went from there but no luck i'm new to this and its really frustrating i don't know what to do anymore.

most engines won't idle for any measurable amount of time...if not under throttle they tend to "load up", meaning fuel begins to build up in the bottom of the crankcase...

i have not invested in a temp gun yet sorry, but it idles for maybe 30 seconds and than it cuts out. well actually monday i got it to drive around but it was running super rich and i went through a tank of gas in like 3 minutes. So maybe i got fuel build up in the crankcase. idk its just really frustrating and i called the place i got it from and they said 30 bucks an hour and it takes bout a week for them to tune it.

if you get it to idle for 30 seconds, that's prolly the most I've ever gotten outta mine...

Listen to what these guys are saying. Watch the temps a bit on a fresh engine. Try to keep it below or around 250 if you have 4-5 tanks threw it.

Also, have you paied attention to the raido settings as far as when everything is on and your finger off the trigger is the carb closed?

Another note is that your engine will not be totally broke in untill about 3/4 of a gallon so it will not hold a tune or run consistant at all untill after that point.

Mine used to idle forever after about 7 tanks. The guy at the LHS used to freak out. Pick up your idle and lean out the highspeed and follow the directions in the link I posted. Good luck and tell us how it worked out.

Get a few plug's change out the one you have. It might have gotten fouled. set to factory settings. start it drive it around till it warms up(lean it an 8th of a turn if it does not want to run long enough to warm up. once it is heated up run it wide open,if it is still boggy turn it an 8th of a turn clockwise.repeat this till the truck smooths out and it responsive at mid and top end. it should have a nice trail of smoke.
once you have properly tuned the high end, move to the low end needle. turn this in 1/6 th turns clock wise, till the truck launches off the line. Remember every time you make an adjustment on the high or low needles, drive the truck around for a minet as the adjustments take a little time to take affect.

my os will idle a hole tank. Once you learn how to tune it will be easyer. A temp gun would make it easyer to tune. most of my engines run 220 to 260
