So I just completed my break-in after a new piston, sleeve and connecting rod installed. I tried the new school break-in outlined the sticky, how to: professional break-in. The last time I used the old school method and the compression didn't last very long. Hopefully this works better. I richened the hsn about 3/4 turn from factory to get 200 degree temps and left the lsn factory. I did 5 runs of 3 minute intervals with temps ranging around 210 to 220 varying the throttle from idle to 1/4 to 1/2, then 3 runs of 5 minute intervals with temps ranging around 230 to 245 varying throttle from idle to1/4 to 1/2 to 3/4. Of course I made sure that the piston was at bdc each time it cooled down to about 85 degrees. I had a max temp of 260 which kind of concerns me a little. I noticed an increase in power a little towards the end of this process. I have a motorsaver air filter and a tsais c5h pipe. I used an OS #8 plug and bryons 20% rtr fuel.

Questions:
Does all this sound correct and reasonable with temps?
Can I go ahead and start to tune my engine?

I'm no expert but it sounds like you did pretty good. 260 is a little high but if it was towards the end of the break in I wouldn't think it did any damage. Justin told me that mine hitting 305 after one gallon on accident probably didn't do anything to it. Not good obviously but it's still running great and it was broken in well before it happened. You can start tuning now, but most people say don't give a screaming race tune until after a gallon of fuel has been through it. You can start tuning for good performance though.

Thanks for the response. The 260 was close to wot and not towards the end of the tank, the temp dropped to 230-240 when it idled a little bit. I love my dxs3 I can watch the temps and time my runs. I double checked temps with a temp gun just to be sure. I'll try to tune a little tomorrow I planned on taking it easy for a while though.

I wish I would of found this forum a 4 years ago when I first got my savage. I've read sooo much info on here in the last couple of weeks. Any more advice would be greatly appreciated.

One more question:
What are everyone's thought on the tsais c5h pipe? I've read mixed reviews on them, I got to keep gunk off my truck plus it looks cool seeing two streams of smoke. I'm really want to try a buku pipe.

all the dual rear exhaust pipes I've seen has been more for looks than performance but I have never seen this one

ya i've heard the dual exhausts actually decrease power and are fairly loud but have no personal experience with them......

Ok tuned my engine a little its making pretty good power. It runs a little on the hot side, though still pouring out smoke. I'm using byron 20% rtr fuel and os#8 plug. I live in northern Michigan and ambient temps are 75 to 80 right now and somewhat high humidity.

Questions:
Does 30% run a little cooler?
Could I switch to an os #10(A5) plug which I think is a med-cold plug to keep temps down?
