The last two outings with my hellfire I have lost signal about 40-50 feet away. The digital meter says around 9.5 volts. Is this too low?

I doubt your signal is too low, my losi runs all the way down to about 9 and in a pinch it runs down to 8.5 if I really have to but don't like to, forgot at what point my alarm goes off at though

I would think that you would be pleanty fine at 9.5V yet. like 25 said I'm sure 8 is still fine. Have you check your antenna wire for bad spots or is then end showing or any cooper showing if so is it against any metal/alu parts if so this is why. Another thing to look for is metal on metal surfaces that could be rubbing.

I know my dx3 dies at 8.5. Check the receiver wire.
