Is there a transmitter that will work with the hpi receiver besides the hpi that goes with it I got car from a friend it starts right up but with no control obviously can't drive it

Not usually, but the good news is there are new RX/TX sets available that are pretty cheap to source and setup. Look at the FlySky brand systems....
