How can I gear lower?

I just bought some Immex jumbo kong tires they are 8.5 inches tall I put on a 12/52 combo clutch spurr is there any other options to gear lower, tranny or diffs? I have a axial.28 and a 3speed conversion the 1st gear is 18/44 it's very slugish out of the hole,I know the tires are alot heavier but I love the gc it gives. It was a .25 truck with a xl conversion I bought used.
 
Thanks for the replies guys, I already have a 12 tooth cb, I was looking for any other methods of gear reduction, I have a 52 tooth metal spur I know there is a 53 out there but I can't find a metal one. Does anyone know if they make any lower first gear ratio tranny gears? Or any diff gears or mods to lower my ratio alittle more? Maybe I need a torqier motor. It's geared to high to even get into 3rd gear at all which makes it useless! It will shift right up through with the stock tires.
 
It's just one of many toys, It will run right over my wifes rustler, it's just a basher, jumps great!
 
Welcome to the forum. It should still be able to hit 3rd gear if you loosen the adjustment screw enough right? If not just get a more powerful motor. Either larger displacement for the torque, or a modded mill for nutty power. I have the k5.9 in my XL with HPI Tremor wheels and Goliath tires and they are pretty heavy but are smaller diameter than your wheels. I think they are 7", maybe a little bigger. With that mill, 16/52 gearing, the 3 speed tranny with high speed 3rd, and the extended chassis my truck still hauls. You are already geared way lower than me, I say try a different mill. I know those tires are huge but still... Also maybe the added stress on your drivetrain is wearing on your clutch shoes. That could hamper acceleration. Also do you have your slipper clutch tightened all the way. You will probably need to do this if you haven't already. I run with mine tightened all the time and have had no issues, just make sure you don't land jumps with the throttle wide open and you should be safe.

Yeah I have the slipper tightened all the way that's the first problem I had afer I put it back togather. I am going to get the alum clutch shoes and try that out, but I think I might look into a bigger motor and hand the 28 down to my mt2 3.0. It will shift into 3rd fine if I hold it up in the air and gas it but not at all even running down the straight on the road it just don't seem to get up enough speed for 3rd.

Tune 3rd gear! Don't expect it to be the same after changing things on the truck. Even your engines tune, on that particular day, can effect your shift points. If you don't have the aluminum clutch shoes already, you will see a big improvement with those. Tune your engine first, once it is running at it's optimal power level then retune all your shift points. When my motor was too rich it wouldn't get enough RPMs to hit 3rd gear on the ground but it would in the air just like yours. Maybe your running too rich. Without more info I don't know what you have and haven't done to your truck but all these things can have adverse affects on your power and shifting.
 
can you shoot a vid of it running?

wondering if you have a tune or other issue possibly.
 
Right now my pull start broke and waiting on a new roto start to get here, but after it does I'll get a vid of it running up and down the road. I read alot on tuning and I think I got it right on but I don't have that much experience like you guys do, I got my first nitro truck about 4 months ago, also I bought this one used from a guy who raced it and sold it since the local track shut down, so I don't know what all he could have done to it either.
 
Sounds like you may need to start from the begining and go over everything starting with your engine tune and then adjusting your gearing. Do you have a temp gun of any kind to check your head temps?

What do you mean by this ? "bigger motor" .32 up have less power and rpm then 28's

So your saying bigger isn't better? I thought a bigger motor would have more torque so it would take off faster, I'm not to concerned with rpm on this truck I don't race it I just bash it. I've seen plenty of vids of the xl wheelying long distances with the 5.9 so would a 28 do better? mine don't but that's why I'm here asking for help because I don't know.
 
Everything is dependent on how you set it up. yes a .28 will make a xl wheely too np and it will also run circles around the 5.9.
 
Well I have alot to learn then about how to set up my truck because it won't even think of a wheely, I thought because it's to long and under powered. So here is my clutch, it looks pretty bad in this blown up pic!

Put in a new clutch and see what happens those carbon shoes are worthless for what yo are trying to do and those are also hammered
 
Yeah I'm thinking alum shoes, would they be good? I'll pick some up on my next order, I just don't know which ones to get.
 
Definitely go with aluminum shoes. Those ones ARE hammered BTW. Change the shoes and see what happens. Also when I said "bigger" motor I meant subsantially bigger like a heli engine (.70 or .90). I mean, at some point when these trucks keep getting bigger and heavier I don't think even a .28 could handle all the weight. A .28 will probably do you just fine, but I'm just sayin', a turbo charged rotary engine isn't going push around a big-rig very well no matter how much horse power it has. There is always a point where additional displacement and rotational mass is beneficial. Like somebody said, it depends on what you want out of it.

I didn't even know they were carbon! I just thought they were stock.

Anybody have suggestions on what ones would be good for me?

Id go with the Nova adjustable alum shoes, there are several types out there and even different conversions and types of setups like feroni shoes, I'm sure you could find more information in that section of the site for more reviews of what people use/like..

Also just a thought but the Bulletproof differentials offered by HPI, changed the gearing of them, they have a little, i mean tiny difference in gear ratio which would lower your gearing, but probably wouldnt be enough to even notice.

Get rid of the 5.9 and buy a .28, depending on how deep your pockets are, LRP Z28R Spec 3 is an excellent factory .28 mill with a affordable price tag, if you want overkill, get a Picco .28 and have ERCM modd it, little more pricey but you could push car tires around on ur savage with that mill... 🙂
