So I searched the forum for an answer and each thread seems to have a different answer. Ask 3 people and get 3 answers. 🙂

So I will ask it again.

Are the HD dog bones better than the stock for the X4.6?

Its really hard to tell if they are actually better. I have ran both probably an equal number of both and seem to have broken about the same nuber of both. I have been buying the HD's latelybecause they have the chrome finnish so they look prettier between the arm's. If you actually want a stronger dog bone get these http://www.smfstore.com/product_info.php?cPath=31_63&products_id=1879

The main problem with dogs are they crack off at the ball on the end.

Ok here's my 2 cents, stock dog bones arent worth anything,, I raced with them and broke them every other week got tired of replacing them so I got the HD ones and only broke 2 in the last 4-5 Yrs, but only my 2 cents,.,. Later

The HD's deffenatly don't bend like the standard ones do but as far as busting the ball off the end I think they are matched between the 2.

Mine allways bent ... never had one snap..

my .2 tho .. stick w. stock black ones they are just as good

ya i have to side with sj on this one, you would be surprised just how well the stock ones hold up!! sometimes its better for things to "flex" instead of just breaking or bending right off the bat!!

All 4 are the same Piper. I don't know the standard part # but the HD is 86134. Thats what I run and "yet" to snap or twist one. I don't think the Hd's will twist B4 they brake but IDK. Yet to burn my 4th gal on them. But 3+ hard on them now with no issues. All are 9x123mm just for reference 4 you..
Hope this helps...

My vote goes for the stock black ones...they will twist or even bend a fair amount before they break, and I can attest to that personally.

Also consider this...I picked up a new set of 4 on Ebay for $.99 (plus $3 shipping). At that price, and as rarely as I hurt the stockers, they're really hard to beat. I would only consider upgrading to something I would never have to replace, like the FLM or New Era ones.

IMO, of course!

i had the HD bones with the stock motor in my savage, never had a problem after breaking several stock bones, but when i put my SH 28 in, i twisted them, i bought the TSAIS CVD bones and never looked back

HPI stock dog bone part number is 86058. there is no difference in right and left or front and back, all 4 are the same size. Hope this is what you need

As I was taking apart my truck to troubleshoot another problem, this is what my dogbones looked like. The 2 HD's were in the front and the stockers in the back. The HD's have been on the truck about a month longer than the stocks. The Stock dogbone all the way to the right of the pic came off the right rear and the HD next to it came off the left front.

I am currently running the HD in the rear and the rear driveshaft with HD cups in the rear aswell. I kept breaking stockers and the cups were getting really bad notches in them. Since putting the HD in I have had no problems and am looking forward to breaking the rest of the stockers so I have an excuse to replace them.

Alright guys, the bone breaker is gonna chime in on this one. Ok, first things first, the reason they are bending or snapping off near the ball end is because there is too much play, sliding between the drive cup and stub axle. Or, your suspension is dropping down too much causing the bones to bind. The first thing to check is to make sure that the black o-rings are still inside the drive cups (coming out the diff). Also check too make sure they are folded or smashed in there. If they are there and are not smashed or folded, then next thing to check for is side-to-side play in the diffs. If the diffs have too much play in them side-to-side, that will also cause bone problems. That's the problem I was having with mine. Since I shimmed the diffs for side-to-side play, I haven't broken a bone yet. That, and I'm also runnin the FLM bones from SMF (which are also the same price as the HPI HD ones if you don't get them from ebay). If the first two check out ok, then move onto the suspension. Check for binding in the suspension, the down travel, and also the bearings inside the hubs. Also, check the bearings inside the diff housing (bulkhead). Go through these steps and hopefully you'll fix the problem.
