Hey guys I have noticed some fuel leaking from the back of the k5.9. I think it is coming from between the backplate and the pull starter. I used to have a roto plate on it and when I changed it to a pull start I checked the o-ring on the backplate and it seemed tight. Could the fuel be coming from under the pull starter? If so, what's the best remedy? Seal it with something? I put some silicone grease (all I had within arms reach LOL) around the rim of the pull start last time and didn't notice any fuel for a while. I thought maybe the new plate solved the problem but obviously not. My pull-starter took a crap on me so I'm gonna have the motor out. I'm going to put a new OWB and starter shaft in as well and check my clutch shoes also. Any tips for the fuel leak?

if its coming from the back plate you can seal it with 1211. if its getting past the OWB with all new parts (OWB shaft, back plate) there is nothing you can do

I'm with bank on this one. The best to use is the threebond 1211 which is the only Nitro Proof sealant found so far.

I typically use Associated Green Slim for the needles and other O-rings.

I really think it was coming from the pull start. Once I got the motor out there was only fuel around the pull start plate and it looked to me like it was coming out of the hole where the string goes through and running down to the bottom of the plate. The right hand side of it was dry. Very little to no moisture around the seam of the engine backplate. I have the new OWB and starter shaft in. The other had been used with a roto for a while, I had the new ones in my toolbox but was waiting till the next time I pulled the motor since the old set was still getting the job done. It would slip on cold starts but still worked partially. Should be good to go now as far as that is concerned, and hopefully it won't allow as much fuel into the pull starter. BTW HPI pull starter, part #- 15226 is a pain in the butt to take apart and put back together. There must be an easier way to do it but I couldn't figure it out. I got it done but man if I thought I could buy another without waiting till the end of next week I would have just bought a new one. I think I'll just buy 2 for my tool box next time I go into the LHS LOL.

As a matter of fact it was, but only this last time when my pull start broke. Would that force the fuel past the OWB?
