So I think I know whats going on but wanted to hear from experianced people. This is my first time tuning and actually first nitro rc. I think I'm running too lean but the engine runs good for a while then I'll open it up and pop engine dies. Fires right back up though. I've been checking my engine temps too an it's low 215 ish I just got done doing the break in procedure mentioned in the sticky. So what's going on ? Too lean? I'm thinking about going back to factory setting and starting over.

if only 215 after running "awhile" sounds to rich and full throttle is drowning her out. If you were to lean you would have higher temps.

I agree with juducator sounds to lean with the temps.. and your right with the lean thought. ..it'll do same thing when to lean.. but when your leaning it out. If you get to the point where it takes a second or so to wind down after full throttle is released it's to lean and you'll have to eutcgeb it up slightly.. but you sound rich right now. .. lean it out then you'll see increase in power and no stalling inless you lean to much.. hope this helps. ..good luck..

Ok so I started over today and seemed to have her running good. But then I ran out of 20% nitro and grabbed my bottle of 33% now it's all off again ughh. I was driving on the grass at a park at this point. I tried tuning on the grass and was getting close but then I ended up at 250f yikes so I stopped. How dangerous is it to reach 250? And is tuning on grass a bad idea?

Really the hpi manual says never to run the engine over or at 250 but 230 is normal. So is that wrong.

a friend of mine had a motor that was happy at 290 andran there all day long. each motor is different so whats normal for one engine is completely wrong for another engine of the same make

Ok so maybe that's why when I was getting hotter I noticed a nice power increase. Next question then is how long are your engines lasting at higher temps and are you rebuilding them or do u basically need a new engine? I imagine a new ring and head would be required at least on a rebuild.

Ok I think I finally got it today I started again back from factory got it poppy coming out of a stop and running nice at full throttle I'm still maybe a little on the rich side because I'm trying to stay under 250f right now is running around 230-240 and drops in temp at idle. No stals and idles well with out engaging the clutch. I could probably get a little more umph out of it but at the sacrifice of shorter engine life. It feel it's plenty fast for me as a beginner and I'm happy with it here for now. I noticed that when I was running on grass the temp rise a little bit up to 260f. I turned the HSN down a 1/8th turn and temp went right down. I also noticed before I made the last adjustment that right after full throttle it would rev for a second before returning to idle. Now it goes right to idle and stays fairly cool with good performance. Thanx for all the help!

glad to hear you got it sorted . yep when it hangs at throttle like that it is coming on too lean so you did a good thing by backing down the needle a bit. remember as long as it makes smoke and doesnt hang the engine is happy . now put your temp gun away and have some fun with it
