Dual Stainless Brakes

Pads on steel brakes isnt really an issue. You just don't use pads. Steel on steel with a mod like the one shown below does the trick and brakes just as good as fiber discs but does so also when soaking wet.

However, I did eventually move to fiber brakes because the steel discs are too thin. They wobble around on the hex and can get unalligned which will have the same effect as hitting the brakes slightly - this does also happen with the stock mount.

Give me steel discs as thick as fiber ones and I'd use them.

Havin trouble with my pads at the mo,might give that a go 🙂.As far as thicker pads, have you considered buying a piece of stainless steel off of the bay & making them yourself?Shouldnt be too hard to do & you could buy them whatever thickness you wanted 🙂.

I'd do a steel to steel set up but I like a linear feeling brake engagement with out it being grabby

I did consider it but making a nice hex into good quality stainless steel isnt that easy and frankly, I was too lazy trying it so far. Fiber is the next best thing and works also - most of the time. 😉

you can add fiber pads to them. Search the hellfire. they have the pad section in the same size you can replace the paper with. its just a thin flat fiber glass part. No glue just floats.

I fixed my brakes the other day. I used Gani's idea but did it without the mod. If you have an extra set of steel shoes laying around all you need to do is add one of them to the setup. It is almost 2 times the thickness of the shoes. So I added it in and left out the shoes. It works like a charm. At first it grabbed way to hard but if you can adjust your radio and teach your finger not to brake like a hammer you can get some great performance out of it.

For those who are runnin metal on metal brakes, there is a draw back to that set-up. Trust me, I know cuz I've already tried it. Alot of people think that stainless steel is really strong and durable, but it actually isn't as strong as you think. Believe it or not, the steel "calipers" on the brake set-up will eventualy wear down the stainless disks. Then, once they start gettin worn out, that's when they start wearin out the "calipers". Like I said at the begining of this post, they will both wear out and you'll be back to the same situation again. So, to save time, just switch over the the dual red fibers and be done with it. Then, when those go, give the PRC replacements a shot. I haven't tried them yet, but possibly will down the road when I need new disks.

xtemsavage, I don't doubt a word you say. I've even got the dual red fibers on hand. But guess what I found out. They aren't a straight swap if you are using steel disks. So I had to do something quick. I'm going to find out how long they last. If you would, could you let us know when your Fiber disks give up the ghost? Would be interesting to see the difference in durability.

Pike, if I remember correctly, when I ran the SS disks on metal "pads", they only lasted 1/2-3/4 of a gallon. I can't remember exactly how long they lasted, but it wasn't that long. The red fibers I'm runnin now only have one tank (250cc) through them and so far work and stop the truck just as good as the SS brakes. But, I've also got a skid plate to help protect everything under there.

Oh heck, I run a gallon in a couple weeks! I'm going to have to make sure I have everything ready for the next swap. I guess I need a skid plate to boot. I run on a lot of rocks. Thanks for the info Xtreme

I also have run the SS breaks and they lasted roughly a gallon not even..
I got the red fiber ones last year and they have lasted about 4-5 gallons, i just noticed mine exploded because i have the center skid plate and the disc hit that LOL

how is that possible? I would guess a small pebble or rock or something got in through the TVPs. Unless the skid plate got pushed into the disk to cause that.

READ FOO !!

Yeah i got a nice ding in my skid plate. The plate is like 3mm from the breaks and literally touching the trans ..

Awesome replys men

thanks

I should of addded a poll to this thread to start but, looks like the red fiber are more popular at this point.

Update :

I inspected my stainless brake set after running 4-5 tanks threw them. I don't see any wear yet.
I did have to turn the brake pressure down to about 25% on my rx from 60% where I was with stock single brake pad setup.

These brakes are brutal, easily flips the truck when applied to hard.

Crash, are you still using them? How are they looking, feeling?
