Do your diff's have too much play?

Attention new savy owners!

Here is a clip of me inspecting my diff's for side to side play.

note: These are brand new diff's after one gallon of fuel.

I was able to shimm before any damage.

Now after about three more gallon's all is well with the diff's.

yes, I guess 26 second's is a bit much.

I wanted to be sure the bearings were not moving.

This is easy to check , If you own a new x style savy and will save you some money so, check your diffs before they break...........

There are the shims you need got them from tower hobbies

Use the pinion shimms to shim the pinion closer to the ring gear

Use the ofna shimms to eliminate slop (just like what you seen in Cash's video

This is a real simple thing to do and IMO needs to be done to every savage diff .. Your shimming to eliminate slop in the diffs , Just make sure you don't over shimm. Everything needs to be able to spin freely

Great thread, I always thought shimming the diff was concerning the spider gears on the inside of the diff, not shimming the sideplay of the ring and pinion.....yet another thing to check before I put my truck back together. Thanks!

Did a check on the rear's today. still perfect, they are looser than when I shimmed them but, not moving side to side yet. all good.

Probably a silly question, but where are the shims going? On the inside of the diff case on the shaft or outside? Can tell from the pictures.

Case,shims then side bearing...Thats why when I do this I leave all internals and stub shafts out until I know how many shims I need and where.

ok,

I have a way to check your mesh on your pinion to drive gear in your diffs.

1. Open the easy access diffs case
2. hold the output drive shaft to transmission
3. try to turn the drive gear (wiggle it checking for play between it's teeth and pinion teeth)

what you are looking for here is that same too loose feeling you get from a spur gear and clutch bell that is set too loose.

There should be little to no play here.

If you find there is alot of play in your diff mesh and you have already shimmed side to side play.

Its time to shim your pinion gear.

I could not get a video of this because it takes two hands to check this.

only having two hands is a poor excuse though. I'm sure with a little creativity you could find a place to balance that camera....:Xfingers:
