Are the 4 bevel diff's from the Savage ss with the aluminum housing better then the stock diff's on the Savage X RTR? I see you can get them on E-Bay ready to drop in for a decent price. Is it worth having one(or two) on hand ready to drop in when the stock one(s) goes? I guess what I'm asking is do the diffs break often? I'm only on my 2nd gallon of fuel so far.

Same question's for the transmission??

PS, I'm in Canada so stuff off E-Bay takes a while to ship here, I have some other spare parts on the way,dog bones etc, the less time I can have my truck down the better! 🙂

Thanks.

Kevin.

Only thing different are the "hardened" shiny outdrive cups. Sure good for spares when you need it

theyre the same

if you grenade a diff, its gonna prob be the ring &/or pinion that gets destroyed. if your worried about that & having extra, then buy a complete diff in bulkhead from the bay so you'll have the ring & pinion.

i don't recall anyone ever damaging diff internals

the diffs in the first x has plastic diff cups and the x 4.6 has alloy cups so yeah new cups will make them stonger cause the cup wont flex. your diffs should last a good while if shimmed good but eventually they will go if one of the bearing fail, so keep an eye on them.the tranny is the same in both of savages

Any idea were I can find info on shimming? I haven't a clue on how to do that, and the reason to do it.

Also, I'm asuming that there's no oil in these diff's, correct?

What maintenance is for the tranny?

Thanks.

Kevin.

fill the diffs up with anywhere from 7k to 100k. everyones different. i used 50k front and 30 k rear the last time i did my diff on my X chassis and like it. You shim your diffs to get more life out of them. a properly shimmed diff should give you lots of life and just maintain by the gallon or so.

tranny i never worry to much about as ive never had issues but there is a thread out there on how to shim it. if i were you id just leave it and enjoy, however if you want to crack into it do a search and you should find the thread its a good step by step walk thru.

Thanks again,

Some more questions.

Where do I get shims?

Does putting oil in the diff's make a big difference both on performance and lasting longer? If so, what does it do for performance?

Kevin.
