Would it be a good idea to get all the grease out of my diffs and change to oil.It can get a little messy sometimes when you want to work on them.I'm right now in the process of shimming my diffs.

I will second that, oil is just as messy and allmost seems harder to get out when ya work on it. eather one is good. If your racing or want to change the way the diffs act then use oil. I use oil in my alum dif cases and to suit my driven stlye (Traction wise)...

Does it have to be any particular grade/viscosity? Am about to shim my diff. I have some silicone grease and wondering if this would be ok.

All you guys on here have been so helpful,I really appreciate it.

I used 50 k front and back. Yea i think it would be Ok . I use silicon grease on my ring@pinio gears in my diff. Also keep in mine that if you use oil only fill the diff maybe 3/4 of the way up. if you fill it to the top, it dosn't have any room for the oil to expand and will blow it out.

I've used bearing grease you can pack in as little or as much as you like. I packed my rear diff full. It actually spared me the expense of replacing another set of diff gears (winter driving in Canada). I'm now using motor oil. It's cheap and it works, and won't freeze. Peace.
